Box Score ASHLAND, VA -- Lamar Giggetts scored a career-high 21 points as Randolph-Macon knocked off Averett, 78-67, Monday evening in men's basketball action in Ashland.
Giggetts was one of three Jackets in double-figures as Andre Simon had 15 points, while Adam Desgain chipped in with 11 on the night. Simon and Giggetts each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Marcus Badger dished out seven assists, while fellow floor general Trent Walker had five helpers.
Averett was paced by Justin Pierce's 15 points, 13 points from Paul Porter and 11 markers from Jeremy Ruffin. The Cougars shot 34.4% from the floor and were just 1-of-12 from behind the three point arc.
Both teams struggled shooting to start the game, with each team scoring just 11 points in the first 10 minutes of action. R-MC went on a 16-4 run, opening up a 31-18 advantage on a Desgain three-pointer with just under five minutes to go in the opening period.
R-MC (7-3) took a 37-27 lead into the intermission and held a double-digit lead for the opening minutes of the second half before AU cut the lead to six at 45-39 with 13:45 to play.
The Jackets scored seven of the next eight points, pushing its lead to 52-40 when Giggetts drained a jumper with 11:47 on the clock.
Averett (2-7) would not get any closer than nine points for the remainder of the game and R-MC was able to build its advantage to as many as 17 when a Desgain three-point bucket made it 75-58 with three minutes to play.
The Yellow Jackets will be off for the holidays and will return to action on December 29th when it hosts the 2011 Randolph-Macon College Coaches Classic Sponsored by Kay Jewelers. R-MC will take on Baruch at 7:00 p.m., while Farmingdale State and Kean will square off in the opening contest at 5:00 p.m. Please note that the consolation and championship games will be at 5:00 and 7:00, respectively on the 30th.
