Division I American Slips by R-MC Men's Hoops 62-61

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Division I American University held off the Randolph-Macon 62-61 Wednesday night in Men's Basketball Exhibition action in the Nation's Capital. 

The two teams were meeting for the third consecutive season with the three games being decided by a combined nine points.

R-MC was led by Adam Desgain who had a team-high 17 points.  Andre Simon joined Desgain in double figures with 15, while Lamar Giggetts had 12 for the Yellow Jackets.  Desgain and Giggetts each grabbed a team-best six rebounds in the loss.

The Yellow Jackets were without senior guard Calvin Croskey and had five freshmen log 10 or more minutes on the night.

Troy Brewer and Charles Hinkle each scored 18 points for the Eagles.  Hinkle had eight rebounds to help AU to a 37-27 edge on the glass.  

The Eagles held an early double-digit advantage, taking a 10 point lead when a Blake Jolivette jumper made the score 23-13 with just over eight minutes to play in the first-half.  AU would take a 34-27 advantage into the locker room at intermission.

R-MC battled back at the outset of the second stanza, pulling within one when a Simon jumper made the score 39-38 with 13:46 to go.

With AU leading 48-44, Simon made a bucket to pull R-MC within two, and then Desgain tied the contest at 48 with a pair of free-throws with 7:53 to play in the game.

A Trent Walker free-throw would give R-MC a 49-48 advantage with just over five minutes to go before back-to-back baskets by Hinkle and Daniel Munoz  put AU back on top  52-49 with 4:41 to go.

A Desgin three-pointer brought R-MC within one at 58-57 with just over two minutes to in the game before Hinkle answered on the other end of the floor to put the Eagles back up by three.

The score stayed that way until there was 41 seconds to play when R-MC's Connor Sullivan made one-of-two from the line to make it 60-58.   

On AU's ensuing possession, Daniel Fisher made a layup with just four seconds to play to make it a two possession game and seal the win.

Randolph-Macon will open up its season on November 15th when it hosts Christopher Newport at 8:15 p.m.
