Emory & Henry Slips by Randolph-Macon 17-10 in ODAC Football Opener

Box Score

ASHLAND, VA – Kyle Bodden completed 33-of-42 passes for 268 yards and the Waps defense forced four turnovers to help Emory & Henry knock off Randolph-Macon 17-18 in ODAC football action Saturday afternoon in Ashland.

After a scoreless first quarter, Emory & Henry got on the board first with a 35 yard field goal off the foot of Matt Churchin, seven seconds into the second stanza.

With less than four minutes to go in the half, Bodden capped an 80 yard drive with a five yard dump pass to Davon Ross sending E&H to the locker room with a 10-0 advantage.

The teams traded possessions in the third quarter before R-MC cracked the scoreboard for the first time on the day when Josh Storm connected on a 31 yard field goal with 37 remaining in the third quarter.

E&H responded on its ensuing driving, marching 85 yards on 10 plays, scoring on an 11 yard pass from Bodden to Chad Williams to go up 17-3.

The Jackets fought back on their next possession, going 80 yards on just eight plays with 50 of those yards coming through the air, courtesy of quarterback Zac Naccarato.  The southpaw would finish the drive with his legs, scrambling for an eight yard touchdown run to cut the E&H lead to 17-10 with 7:43 to go in the contest.

Randolph-Macon then forced a three-and-out to get the ball back for the offense with 5:28 to play in the game.

R-MC drove down the Wasps' 16 yard line before a clipping penalty backed them up to the 26.  Naccarato was able to connect to Luke Sellers to get the Jackets back inside the red zone, but on third down from the 17, Naccarato's pass was picked off by Ross Ellis to seal the win for E&H.

R-MC had 397 yards off offense to 294 yards for Emory & Henry.   R-MC ran the ball 44 times for 174 yards, with Thaddeus Scruggs leading the way with 98 yards on the day.

The Jackets got eight tackles and an interception from David Fetter, while Akeem Hardy also had eight tackles.

Five different receivers caught at least three passes for Emory & Henry, with Preston Jennings leading the way with 11 grabs for 50 yards.

Randolph-Macon will travel to Catholic for a Friday evening game next week. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. in the Nation's Capital.
