Randolph-Macon Holds Off Late Shenandoah Rally for Fourth Straight Win

Box Score

Randolph-Macon Field Hockey (4-4 / 1-0) capitalized on two Mary McCarthy goals and tough defense in the closing minutes to get past Shenandoah 3-2 in Ashland Sunday.

McCarthy scored her first goal in the 17th minute on a pass from Monica Jenkins in front of the net. The senior attacker struck again just four minutes later off of a long pass from Courtney Owens.

Shenandoah went on the attack after halftime with Paola Aguilar scoring unassisted in the 39th minute to cut the Randolph-Macon lead to 2-1.

Freshman Mikalea Rumley extended the Yellow Jackets' lead to 3-1 when she rattled the cage on a McCarthy pass in the 57th minute.

With just over ten minutes to play, Aguilar fired in her second goal of the game, pulling the Hornets within one at 3-2.

The R-MC defense locked down the SU attack in the closing minutes and Randolph-Macon held on for the 3-2 win.

Keeper Nicole Woodworth stopped five shots in goal for the Yellow Jackets while Hornets' goalie Sarah Clare tallied 11 saves.

Randolph-Macon outshot Shenandoah 25-9 and held a 12-3 advantage in corners.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Tuesday, September 21st when they travel to Goucher for a 7:00 non-conference matchup.
