Box Score Randolph-Macon Field Hockey (4-4 / 1-0) capitalized on two Mary McCarthy goals and tough defense in the closing minutes to get past
Shenandoah 3-2 in Ashland Sunday.
McCarthy scored her first goal in the 17th minute on a pass from
Monica Jenkins in front of the net. The senior attacker struck
again just four minutes later off of a long pass from Courtney Owens.
Shenandoah went on the attack after halftime with Paola Aguilar
scoring unassisted in the 39th minute to cut the
Randolph-Macon lead to 2-1.
Freshman Mikalea Rumley extended the Yellow Jackets' lead
to 3-1 when she rattled the cage on a McCarthy pass in the
57th minute.
With just over ten minutes to play, Aguilar fired in her second
goal of the game, pulling the Hornets within one at 3-2.
The R-MC defense locked down the SU attack in the closing
minutes and Randolph-Macon held on for the 3-2 win.
Keeper Nicole Woodworth stopped five shots in goal for the
Yellow Jackets while Hornets' goalie Sarah Clare tallied 11
saves.
Randolph-Macon outshot Shenandoah 25-9 and held a 12-3 advantage
in corners.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Tuesday, September
21st when they travel to Goucher for a 7:00
non-conference matchup.
