– The Randolph-Macon Men's Basketball team advanced to
the Sectional Final Round with a 68-55 victory over DeSales Friday
night at St. Mary' College of Maryland.
R-MC will take on winner of Franklin
Marshall and the host Seahawks Saturday at 7:00 p.m. with the
winner advancing to the Final Four in Salem next
weekend.
R-MC
(25-6) was led by 15 points from Erich Pugh. He was joined in
double-digits by Calvin Croskey and Brandon Braxton who each had 12
in the win. Adam Desgain and Danny Jones had nine and eight points,
respectively off the bench for R-MC, helping the Jackets reserves
to a 23-8 edge over the DU bench.
The
Jackets were able to garner a 41-27 edge on the glass, led by Kevin
Voelkel's game-high nine boards and eight rebounds by
Croskey.
DeSales
(24-6) was led by Brian Hunter with a game-high 27 points.
Darnell Braswell added 15 points for the Bulldogs who were held to
just 35.3% (18-of-51) from the floor on the night.
Randolph-Macon started off slow, not making
a basket for the first 5:40 of the contest, allowing DU to jump out
to an early lead.
R-MC was
able to rebound from the sluggish start and a three-pointer by Pugh
tied the game at 17-17 with just under eight minutes to go in the
half. The Jackets were able to reel off the next five points
as well, taking a 22-17 advantage when Pugh knocked down two
free-throws with 5:28 to go.
After
back-to-back buckets by DeSales cut the R-MC lead to one, the
Jackets scored eight of the final 11 points of the first stanza to
take a 30-24 lead into the locker room.
The Yellow
Jackets were able to open up a nine point lead early in the second
half when a Voelkel jumper pushed the score to 35-26.
With the
score 42-33, Desgain and Thomas Scheeler drained back-to-back
three-pointers to put R-MC up 48-33 with just under 13 minutes to
play.
The
Bulldogs fought back, cutting their deficit to 48-40 when Hunter
converted to attempts from the charity stripe with 9:49.
The
Jackets would seal the game with an 8-2 run, capped by a Croskey
bucket with 8:12 to go.
