Box Score ASHLAND, VA - Hampden-Sydney shot close to 55% for the game as
the Tigers knocked off No. 16 Randolph-Macon 66-61 in ODAC Men's
Basketball action Wednesday night in Ashland.
Randolph-Macon closes out the regular season at 20-5 overall and
11-5 in the ODAC. H-SC improves their record to 13-11
and 8-7 in league play. The win marks the first victory
for H-SC over R-MC in Crenshaw Gym since January 10, 2001.
The Yellow Jackets got a team-high 19 points from Danny Jones and
11 points from Eric Pugh. Kevin Voelkel led R-MC with
seven rebounds on the night. R-MC was
20-of-56 (35.7%) from the field, 8-of-21 from the three point
line.
The Tigers were paced by a game-high 25 points from Turner
King. Jonathan Mudd, who made 10-of-12 from the foul line,
finished with 18 points, while Harrison George added 10 in the
win. H-SC was 23-of-42 from the field and converted 17-of-23
from the charity stripe.
A first-half that saw eight ties and 15 lead changes, ended with
H-SC up 34-31 behind 11 points from King, while Jones dropped in 12
for the Jackets.
R-MC scored the first eight points of the second-half and took a
39-34 lead when Pugh drained a three-pointer with just 18 minutes
to go.
The Tigers responded with an 8-0 run of their own, taking a
42-39 lead on a free-throw by Mudd with just over 15 minutes
to play in the contest.
An Adam Desgain three-pointer on R-MC's ensuing possession tied
the game at 42-42 before a layup by Harrison with 13:31 put H-SC up
for good at 44-42.
Randolph-Macon stayed close, not only allowing the
Hampden-Sydney's lead reach more than six. The Yellow Jackets
had a chance to tie the game, but a Jones layup fell short and
Harrison converted a pair of free throws on the other end to give
H-SC win.
The Yellow Jackets will be off until the quarterfinals of the
2010 ODAC Tournament next Friday at a time and against an opponent
to be determined.
