R-MC Men's Hoops Stays Perfect with a 80-68 win over Christopher Newport

ASHLAND, VA - No. 1 Randolph-Macon Men's Basketball improved to 13-0 on the season as it topped regional rival Christopher Newport 80-68 Saturday afternoon in Ashland. The Yellow Jackets never trailed and featured five players in double figures, led by Jordan Brown's game-high 17 points. 

The 13 wins is the most by a Yellow Jackets team to start a season since the 2002-03 team won their first 12 to begin the year.

Danny Jones came off the bench to score 12 points in the win, while Calvin Croskey had 12 points as well to go along with 11 from Eric Pugh and 10 from Brandon Braxton.  The Yellow Jackets made 34-of-63 shots from the floor to shoot at a 54% clip, while they assisted on 17 of those 34 makes.

Mark Blasingame had a team-high 12 points and 10 rebounds for CNU (5-7), to go along with 11 points each from Brian Hermann, Josh Russell and Mike Green. The Captains made 38.8% of their shots on the afternoon.

R-MC was able to build a double digit lead in the first-half when back-to-back three pointers from Adam Desgain made the score 22-12 with 11:31 to play in the opening half.

The Yellow Jackets lead would grow to as many as 14 in the first-stanza when a Braxton bucket put R-MC out in front 26-12 with 8:24 on the clock.

CNU cut the R-MC lead to 32-25 on a Russell three pointer with 2:01 to go in the half before the teams exchanged buckets to send the score to 37-27 at the break.

The Yellow Jackets came out firing in the second-half, opening up a 16 point advantage on a Mark Baker three-pointer.  The Captains were able to chip away, pulling with eight points when a basket by Blasingame made the score 55-47 with just over 11 minutes to go. 

That would be as close as the Captains would get as R-MC was able to score 13 of the next 18 points, taking a 70-55 lead when Brown converted a layup.  The Yellow Jackets lead would hit as many as 20 down the stretch as the secured the victory. 

R-MC will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to No. 24 Eastern Mennonite for a 7:00 p.m. ODAC matchup.
