Box Score ASHLAND, VA - Tyler Sanborn had a
game-high 26 points and 15 rebounds as No. 2 Guilford held off No.
9 Randolph-Macon 82-73 Saturday afternoon in ODAC Men's Basketball
action in Ashland.
R-MC (15-4 / 6-4 ODAC) was led by
Brandon Braxton who had a team-best 19 points, Erich Pugh had
15, while reserve Thomas Scheeler had a career-high 11 points and
Danny Jones added 10 off the bench for Randolph-Macon. The
Jackets made 30-of-59 shots from the field to shoot at a 50% clip
for the day.
GC (18-1 / 9-1 ODAC) also got 22
points from Rhett Bonner and 13 points from Clay Henson. The
Quakers shot 54% from the floor for the game, making 27-of-50 shots
from the field. Guilford also converted 25-of-32 shots from the
free-throw line, including Bonner, who was 12-of-12 from the
charity stripe.
R-MC started out strong in the
first-half taking a 29-19 lead when Calvin Croskey knocked down a
jumper with just over eight minutes to go. A Pugh bucket with
2:47 to play would push the Jackets lead to 40-27.
GC closed the half on a 7-0 run,
cutting the R-MC lead to 40-34 when Bonner converted two free
throws with 39 seconds to play.
The Jackets came out of the locker
room and extended their lead to eight on its opening possesion
via a Braxton layup. GC then went on a 20-7 run, taking a
54-49 lead when Henson connected on jumper with 14:05 to play.
The Yellow Jackets hung tough and
did not allow the Quakers to extended their lead to anymore than
five over the next 10 minutes and were able to regain the lead when
a Pugh bucket made the score 67-66 with just over four minutes to
go in the game.
Back-to-back scores by Bonner
helped GC pull back in front 70-67, before a Braxton layup with
1:45 to play made the score 72-70 in favor of Guilford.
That would be as close as R-MC
would get as Martin Stephenson hit a jumper with 1:08 to play to
make it 74-70 and the Quakers made 8-of-10 free throws down the
stretch, six of which were made by Bonner, sealing the win for GC.
Randolph-Macon will be back in
action on Wednesday when it travels to Roanoke for a 7:00 p.m. ODAC
game.
