Wesleyan got 31 points from Stephen Fields as the Marlins held off
No. 3 Randolph-Macon 72-69 Wednesday night in ODAC Men's Hoops
action in Ashland.
R-MC (14-2 / 5-2 ODAC) was led by
Danny Jones who had team-high 15 points to lead five scorers in
double-figures for the Yellow Jackets. Calvin Croskey had 13
points, Brandon Braxton and Eric Pugh had 12, while Jordan Brown
added 11. Kevin Voelkel had a game-high eight rebounds to
help R-MC to a 34-27 edge on the glass.
Quantrell Simmons joined Fields in
double digits with 11 points, including two, key three pointers in
the final 2:28 to help VWC to the win. Donald Vaughan and
Chris Astorga each had eight in the win for VWC, which improves to
15-2 overall and 6-2 in the league.
The R-MC defense held VWC to
1-of-12 shooting to open the game, allowing the Jackets to open up
a 15-6 advantage on a dunk by Braxton with just under 11 minutes to
go in the half. The Marlins battled back and were able to
pull within one at 31-30 when Fields knocked down a three-pointer
at the buzzer.
After R-MC came out of the locker
room and extended their lead to three, VWC went on a 17-4 run that
was capped by a pair of free throws by Simmons with 11:40 to play
in the game.
The Jackets fought back in the
latter half of the second stanza and had a chance to tie the game
at the buzzer, but Jones' three pointer rattled out to give VWC the
win.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on
Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when they travel to Randolph College for an
ODAC matchup.
