King's Rushes its Way to a 16-10 Victory over
Randolph-Macon Football

ASHLAND, VA - Claude O'Conner ran for 116 yards
and Cory Lavin threw two timely touchdown passes as they led King's
College to a 16-10 road victory over Randolph-Macon in both teams
opening contest of 2009.
O'Conner paced a Monarchs ground attack that
racked up 236 yards on the day. Lavin threw for just 99 yards, but
was an efficient 11-of-19 and threw two short touchdown passes to
Ken Loomis inside the Red Zone.
R-MC got 84 yards on the ground from Steve
Mathews, while Austin Faulkner was 11-of-20 and threw one touchdown
for the Jackets.
After holding King's on their first possession
of the game, the Jackets took over on their own 39 yard line and
promptly drove 61 yards on seven plays, capped off by a 26 yard
touchdown pass from Faulkner to Chase Phillips to make the score
7-0.
King's Jay Torres provided a spark on the
ensuing kickoff, returning the ball 40 yards to the R-MC 45 yard
line. After driving down to the Yellow Jackets 15, the drive
stalled but Andrew DeRito booted a 32 yard field goal to get the
Monarchs on the board at 7-3.
King's took the lead on its first possession of
the second-half, rushing the ball five consecutive times for 71
yards, setting up a two yard touchdown play-action pass from Lavin
to Loomis. The point after attempt missed, leaving the score 9-7 in
favor of King's with 10:18 to play in the third quarter.
On R-MC's next possession, the Jackets drove
down to the King's 25 yard line, but a fumble gave the ball back to
the Monarchs, who then drove 72 yards on nine plays, making the
score 16-7 on another short touchdown pass from Lavin to Loomis.
Christian Stahl led the R-MC defense with
10 tackles, while Brandon Harrison made eight stops and had an
interception for the Jackets.
On the receiving end for Randolph-Macon, Earl
Peoples made four catches for 37 yards, while Phillips nabbed three
balls for 38 yards.
Ryan Cordingly led King's with a team-best nine
tackles on the day, while Eric Nelson had eight and Eric Fay had
six.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on
Saturday when it travels to Johns Hopkins for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
