Second Half Defense Propels R-MC past Bridgewater

ASHLAND, VA - Randolph-Macon held Bridgewater to just 16 points in
the second half as the Yellow Jackets broke open what was a one
point game at the half and topped the Eagles 71-38 in ODAC Men's
Basketball action.
The 38 points allowed by the Jackets is a season
low and the R-MC defense held BC to 27.6% shooting for the game,
only allowing 17 made shots on 61 attempts from the field,
including just one three-point field goal on 16 tries.
Justin Short scored 14 of his game-high 22
points in the second half to lead the offensive charge for
Randolph-Macon. Short also joined teammate Danny Jones with a
game-high eight rebounds. Jones added 11 points on the offensive
end for R-MC, while Brandon Braxton had nine points in the win as
well. R-MC benefited from a strong night at the foul line,
converting 27-of-40 attempts from the line.
A low scoring first half saw the Jackets take a
23-22 lead into the locker room. Randolph-Macon came out and scored
the first 13 points of the second stanza, taking a 36-22 advantage
on a bucket by Short with just under 16 minutes remaining in the
game.
BC cut the lead to 38-28 on a jumper by D.J.
Billups, but R-MC put the game away with 12-0 spurt that Eric Pugh
capped with a bucket that put the Jackets up 50-28 with 10 minutes
to go in the contest.
Randolph-Macon will close out its home slate of
games on Saturday when it welcomes ODAC rival Virginia Wesleyan to
Crenshaw Gymnasium. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. and it will also
mark the final home game for seniors Short and Boris Varela.
