Box Score GREENSBORO, NC -- The Randolph-Macon football
team rallied late but it was not enough as the Yellow Jackets saw
its five game winning streak come to an end Saturday with a 20-13
ODAC loss at Guilford. The loss drops R-MC to 5-3 overall and 3-1
in the ODAC. Guilford improves to a 2-6 and 1-3 in the league.
On its second possession of the game, R-MC drove
down to the GC seven-yard line but the drive stalled and the
Jackets were forced to settle for a 24-yard field goal off the foot
of Josh Storm to go up 3-0.
After Guilford tied the score a 3-3 on its
ensuing possession, R-MC answered right back, taking the kick and
driving deep into Quaker territory before Storm booted a
career-high 41 yard field goal to put the Jackets up 6-3 with 47
seconds to go in the opening quarter.
That proved the last lead of the contest for
Randolph-Macon as Guilford went ahead for good on a 61 yard scoring
strike from Billy Watkins to Mike Williams, making score 10-6. GC
then tacked on a field goal with 8:06 left in the first half,
taking a 13-6 lead into the dressing room.
The Quakers extended their advantage when
Watkins found Jon McKinney on a 41 scoring pass with 3:52 to go in
the third quarter, giving GC a 20-6 lead.
R-MC rallied late in the fourth quarter, when
Austin Faulkner found Dwayne Jenkins in the back of the end zone
for a touchdown with just under four minutes to go in the game.
That would be as close as the Jackets would get
as Guilford was able to get three first downs on its next
possession to run out the clock and preserve the victory.
Thaddeus Scruggs led R-MC offensively with 115
yards on 23 carries. Earl Peoples grabbed four balls for 84 yards
in a losing effort. Brandon Harrison led the way on defense with
eight tackles and a forced fumble.
Watkins finished the game 35-of-52 for 378 yards
and a pair of touchdowns in the win. Four different Quaker
receivers caught at least seven passes, led by Tyler Hasty's nine
grabs. Richie Paul had 18 total tackles for Guilford, two of which
were for loss of yards and he had one of three Quaker sacks on the
day.
Randolph-Macon will travel to Bridgewater
College next Saturday a key ODAC match up. Kickoff is slated for
1:00 p.m. The loser of that contest will be eliminated from ODAC
Championship contention.
