ASHLAND, VA - Guilford's Clay Henson and Rhett
Bonner scored 27 and 23 points, respectively as the home standing
Quakers knocked off Randolph-Macon 71-66 in ODAC Men's Hoops action
Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.
R-MC (14-5 / 8-2 ODAC) was paced by Justin Short
who led three Yellow Jackets in double figures with 18 points.
Jordan Brown scored 14 points in the loss, while Danny Jones came
off the bench, scoring 13 points to help the R-MC bench to a 21-7
edge over the GC reserves. Boris Varela and Billy Campion each
pulled down seven rebounds for the Jackets who shot 41% from the
floor. R-MC made 25-of-61 shots, but could only muster eight made
field goals on 28 attempts from beyond the three-point arc.
GC (15-4 / 8-2 ODAC) also got a game-high 13
rebounds from Tyler Sanborn who chipped in with eight points in the
victory as well. The Quakers had just five players tally points in
the scorebook and shot 44% on 22-of-50 attempts from the field.
Guilford made 20-of-25 free-throws, led by Bonner's 10 makes from
the charity stripe.
The game featured 12 ties and 18 lead changes
and GC held a slim 36-35 lead at the intermission.
With the Quakers up 48-46, R-MC went on an 11-2
run that featured two three-point field goals from Eric Pugh, the
second of which gave the Jackets a 57-50 edge with 8:51 to go in
the game.
GC battled back with an 11-3 run of its own,
pulling ahead on tip-in by Gabriel Lowder with 3:27 to go that made
the score 61-60 in favor the of the Quakers.
Jones helped pull R-MC ahead at 62-61 with a
pair of free throws with 2:23 to play before Lowder struck again on
GC's next possession, knocking down a trifecta to put his team up
64-62 with just over two minutes remaining.
A Short bucket on R-MC's ensuing possession tied
the game for the 12th and final time before the Quakers
converted seven free-throws in the final 1:24 to take the win.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday
when it hosts Roanoke College at 7:00 p.m. in Ashland.
