R-MC Men's Basketball Holds off Eastern Mennonite 82-73 for
10th Straight Victory

ASHLAND, VA - The Randolph-Macon men's basketball team ran its
winning streak to 10 games with a 82-73 victory over visiting
Eastern Mennonite Wednesday night in ODAC action.
R-MC (11-3 / 5-0 ODAC) had four players in double-figures with
Justin Short leading the charge with 17 tallies. Jordan Brown had
15 points, while Kevin Voelkel had a career-high 11 in the Jackets
victory. Boris Varela chipped in with 10 points and pulled down a
game-high 12 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double and
helped the Jackets to a 44-35 edge on the glass.
EMU (8-6 / 3-3 ODAC) was led by D.J. Hinson who connected on
four shots from three-point land on his way to a game-high 20
points. Todd Phillips had 18 points and Orie Pacione chipped in
with 8 points and a team-high 10 boards in a losing effort.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 15-0 lead to start the
contest after a dunk by Brown on a fast break with just over 13
minutes to play in the half. Following Brown's dunk, EMU began to
chip away at the lead, managing to pull within six points at 37-31
when Hinson nailed a three-pointer with 31 seconds to go. R-MC took
a 40-31 lead into the locker room after Short connected on three
foul shots with under a second remaining.
The Royals came out in the second half and continued to battle,
eventually tying the game at 58 on a trifecta by Hinson and took
the lead on its ensuing possession when a Pacione bucket made
the score 60-58 with 10:22 to go in the game.
Randolph-Macon responded by taking back the lead with a 17-5
run, pushing its advantage to 75-65 when Brown put back a missed
Eric Pugh three-pointer with 2:10 remaining. The Jackets would then
connect on five foul shots down the stretch to seal the win.
R-MC is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Emory
& Henry for a 2:00 p.m. ODAC game.
