R-MC Men's Basketball Knocks off No. 13 Ursinus
75-63
ASHLAND, VA - Randolph-Macon College's Justin Short tallied 21
points, including 14 in the second-half and his 1,000th career
tally as well as he led the Yellow Jackets to a 75-63 victory
over No. 13 Ursinus College in the championship game of the 2008
R-MC Coaches Classic sponsored by Rees Jewelers.
Short, who was named the tournament's most outstanding player
was joined in double-digits by Brandon Braxton with 15 points,
all-tournament choice Jordan Brown with 11 and Danny Jones, who
came off the bench for 10 points.
Ursiuns (6-2) was led by all-tournament team selections John
Noonan and Keith Page who had 24 and 18 points, respectively for
the Bears. Matt Hilton chipped in with 11 tallies in the loss for
UC.
The hot shooting Bears took an 11-point lead late in the
first-half when a Noonan bucket with under two minutes to go made
the score 34-23. Back-to-back baskets by Calvin Croskey and Kevin
Voelkel cut the Ursinus lead to 34-27 at the break.
R-MC (7-3) came out of the locker room and outscored UC 13-4,
taking the lead on a Brown layup with just under 14 minutes to go.
The game remained close down the stretch with neither team able
to open up more than a five point edge before R-MC went on a 10-3
run over the final three minutes of the game to seal the
victory. The run included four free-throws by Short that put
him over the 1,000 point plateau for is career. The Yellow Jackets
outscored the Bears 48-29 in the second stanza, including a 14-0
edge in points off the bench.
Randolph-Macon held a 38-30 advantage on the boards, including a
14-4 edge on the offensive glass. R-MC finished the game shooting
43%, making 27-of-63 shots from the floor, while UC was 25-of-51
(49%).
