71-64 in Men's Basketball Action
(Box
Score)
Wooster, Oh. - Senior guard Justin Short netted thirty points to
lead all scorers in the championship game of the 15th
Annual Al Van Wie/Rotary Basketball Classic Saturday night, but
Washington & Jefferson relied on a balanced scoring attack to
defeat the Yellow Jackets 71-64.
Washington & Jefferson sprinted to an early 11-2 lead just
3:04 into the first half. After a timeout, the Yellow Jackets went
on a 5-0 run, thanks to points from Danny Jones and Brandon
Braxton. R-MC stayed within striking distance of W&J for much
of the first half, but the Presidents carried a 31-24 lead into
halftime.
After W&J increased its lead to nine points, R-MC outscored
the Presidents 16-7 to tie the game with ten minutes remaining in
regulation. Justin Short and Danny Jones each registered six points
on the run. Although Short would tally eleven points in the final
ten minutes of the second half, including nine in the last forty
seconds, the Presidents outscored the Yellow Jackets 24-17 to grab
the victory.
R-MC's Danny Jones netted eleven points to complement Short's
thirty. W&J's Albert Varacallo, Brian Felker, and Josip
Lucic-Jozak each totaled double-digit points. W&J shot 50% from
the field in the second half, while R-MC shot just 32% in the
second stanza. Although the Yellow Jackets grabbed ten steals (the
Presidents managed just three), Washington & Jefferson
out-rebounded Randolph-Macon 38-29 in forty minutes of play.
After the game, Short was tabbed Defensive MVP of the
tournament, while Jordan Brown was named to the All-Tournament
Team.
R-MC returns to action on Sunday, November 30, when they travel
to DeSales University. Tipoff is set for 3:00.
