
Matt Gray is in his 11th year as assistant coach with the Randolph-Macon Football program. Gray is in his seventh year as the Yellow Jackets defensive coordinator and works specifically with the R-MC safeties.
In 2013, Gray helped guide a defense that was first in the conference against the run at 112.6 yards per game.
Gray came to Randolph-Macon from Illinois Wesleyan University, where he was an assistant coach during the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
At Illinois Wesleyan, Gray coached the linebackers, worked with all phases of the special teams, was assistant strength coach, and served as defensive coordinator for the junior varsity squad. In addition to his football duties at Illinois Wesleyan, Gray was a physical education instructor. During his two years as an assistant coach at IWU, Gray successfully completed his Master of Science degree in sport psychology at Illinois State University.
Prior to his stint at Illinois Wesleyan, Gray was an assistant coach at St. Joseph's College in Indiana, where he worked with all phases of the special teams and coached the linebackers.
Before his time at St. Joseph's College, Gray was an assistant coach at his alma matter, Albion College, in Albion, Mich. While at Albion, Gray coached the outside linebackers and worked with the offensive scout team during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. During the 2001 season, Gray was also a physical education teacher at Marshall High School in nearby Marshall, MI
A 2000 graduate of Albion College, Gray was a three-year starter at linebacker. He was a four-year letter-winner, a member of three Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship teams and two NCAA Division III playoff teams. Gray was nominated Academic All-Conference three times.
Besides his participation in football at Albion, Gray was a Student Athlete Advisory Committee representative, a NCAA Self Study athletic representative, and served as president of the Physical Education Club. He received his B.A. degree in physical education with a minor in health education in December of 2000.
Gray and his wife Carrie reside in Mechanicsville with their daughter Myah Rose.
