Phillips completed his ninth season on the R-MC staff in 2022. He served as defensive coordinator. Phillips has previously worked with the secondary and the wide receivers.
 
R-MC had a record-setting season in 2022. The Yellow Jackets went 10-0 during the regular season, the first team to reach double figures in wins. R-MC went 7-0 in conference play to claim its 13th ODAC championship, the most in league history. The Yellow Jackets hosted SUNY Cortland in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs and rallied for a 35-28 victory for the 11th win of the season. R-MC would fall 39-32 at Delaware Valley in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs.
 
R-MC is one of six programs in NCAA Division III with nine or more wins in each of the past four full seasons (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022). The Yellow Jackets have a 30-3 ODAC record since 2018 (.909). R-MC owns a 25-2 record since 2020 (.926) and has the top winning percentage of all programs in North Carolina and Virginia since 2018 (.860).
 
In the fall of 2021, the Yellow Jackets went 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the ODAC. R-MC tied for the top spot in the conference standings. The Yellow Jackets were ranked No. 20 in the final AFCA Coaches' Poll and No. 23 in the final D3football.com Top 25.
 
Phillips was a four-year letter-winner for the Yellow Jackets and a four-year starter as a punt returner. He was twice named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. For three semesters, Phillips was on the Top 10 Academic List for the R-MC football team, including No. 2 for the 2012 spring semester.
 
A native of Harrisburg, N.C., Phillips graduated from Hickory Ridge High School in 2009. After reaching the Dean's List for four semesters, he earned a degree from Randolph-Macon in Religious Studies with a minor in Ethics. Phillips and his wife, Lauren, also a 2013 graduate of R-MC, welcomed baby Wyatt to their family in March 2017 and twins Clayton and Barrett in May 2019.
