Merkel, Josh 24

Josh Merkel
Head Coach, Randolph-Macon College

"I believe Randolph-Macon College has separated itself from the competition with its winning tradition, family atmosphere and the track record of success for former players and coaches in the program. The work ethic, discipline, character, and leadership are passed from one class of players to the next. Those are qualities that lay the foundation for RMC alums to be successful and significant in their lifetime."

Former Head Coach Nathan Davis Headshot a University of New Hampshire Polo

"The biggest impact that Randolph-Macon basketball has had on my career is that it taught me about loyalty. Loyalty to those whom I played with, those who came before me, and those who have come along since I left. Randolph-Macon is a basketball program in the purest sense. Macon guys take care of Macon guys and that will never change."

"I was very fortunate to have experienced the great highs of college basketball in my playing and coaching careers. I can definitely say that my time at Randolph-Macon was awesome. Incredible energy, tradition, and support made walking into Crenshaw Gymnasium exciting. Randolph-Macon basketball is without a doubt a place for a student-athlete to prosper."

Chris Hamilton

Chris Hamilton, Class of 2015
RMC Assistant Coach, 2016-18

"I came to Randolph-Macon wanting to be a part of a winning program. I left RMC with life lessons on what it takes to win, but more importantly the standard of excellence required in order to do so at the highest level. Randolph-Macon basketball is a family. Family that is founded on a culture of caring more about the unit than yourself, a culture of committing to success and the habits necessary to obtain it. And finally, a culture of competing at your best in the classroom and on the court in a manner that represents all who came before you and those that are yet to come. I would not be who I am today without the opportunities and support Randolph-Macon provided me and I will forever be proud and grateful to be a member of the Jackets Family."

Sean McAloon Final Head Shot

"The experiences I was able to have at RMC as a player and coach have prepared me for my job with my players,  and off the court with my wife and children. Lessons learned in being a part of something greater than yourself while working as a unit toward a common goal as well as learning about being on time, respect, compassion, family, and love have helped me to become a better coach, father, and husband. I am forever grateful for my growth at Macon and how it has shaped my life "

"Randolph-Macon was not only a decision I made for four years, but a lifelong choice. RMC is a place where I will always be welcomed home and treated like family; from the President to the professors to the faculty and staff and countless friends. RMC basketball taught me things I didn't know and needed to learn, like how family can be bigger than one's immediate relations, and humbled me to the true sense of achieving greatness together. The RMC tradition is like no other and I am fortunate and lucky to be a part of our tight-knit tree.  RMC will continue to succeed because of the common care of all who came before."

The relationships I built with my coworkers, the community, and the students at R-MC is something that I will forever cherish. RMC is a special place which produces special people. Go Jackets!"

Hal Nunnally (Hall of Fame)

Hal Nunnally
RMC Head Coach 1975-99

"I observed Randolph-Macon basketball for over 40 years as a student scorekeeper, fan, assistant, and as head coach. I cannot believe any school in the country has enjoyed a comparable level of success while refusing to compromise standards for selecting its players. Yellow Jacket basketball is truly a unique phenomenon in college athletics and being part of it was the high point of my life."

Paul Webb Head Shot

Paul Webb
RMC Head Coach 1956-75

"I spent 19 of the happiest and most rewarding years of my life coaching basketball at Randolph-Macon College. We were always able to recruit fine, outstanding student-athletes. The administration and faculty were great people and very supportive of the program. Our basketball program was very successful during those years, but more importantly, all but one of our four-year players graduated. For this, I am very proud and grateful."

"Becoming a part of the Randolph-Macon men's basketball program has been the most impactful experience of my life. The people I was fortunate enough to work with on a daily basis across the RMC community were an integral part to making the experience special. I cannot thank Coach Merkel enough for taking a chance on me and bringing me into the Jackets Family. His mentorship has been crucial to not only my professional development, but my personal development as well. I am excited to continue building on the relationship we have established for years to come. Another huge part of my experience at RMC were the partnerships with the assistants, including the ones who were a part of the program before my arrival. These men are intelligent, tireless workers who I leaned on and learned from on how to uphold the high expectations of the program. What really makes the experience of coaching at Randolph-Macon fulfilling are the student-athletes. The relationships developed with the current players and alumni are ones I will always cherish and look forward to enhancing throughout the years. This is a special time for the Randolph-Macon Men's Basketball program. There will be a ton of new faces along with familiar ones who were key to the success over the past few years. I am ecstatic to see from afar the next steps the program takes, and how this team will continue to carry on "the standard" and the tradition of excellence set by the people who have come before them.

JD Byers Head Shot

"My three years at Randolph-Macon were truly incredible.  The Men's Basketball program is the epitome of excellence.  Having the opportunity to work for a program where the administration, student body and outside followers devoted so much of their personal time to support the efforts of our student-athletes helped me develop great pride and passion for the college.  The tradition of the program extends way beyond the thousands of wins and subsequently over 30 banners that hang in the Crenshaw Gymnasium rafters.  Instead, its tradition is embodied by the family network that has been formed from the high-character young men who have represented the college, both on the court and now in the real world.  I am inherently grateful for the opportunity I had at RMC and will always follow the success of the Jackets."
