FOREST, Va. – After helping Randolph-Macon Men's Volleyball clinch four wins, including the defending NCAA Division III National Champions,
Bryce Matthews (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) has been named ODAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Matthews led Randolph-Macon to another perfect week, as the Yellow Jackets posted a 4-0 record to clinch their fifth victory in a row.
RMC swept Averett in a road doubleheader on Wednesday, before sweeping Bridgewater and #9 Southern Virginia in a tri-match. Against Averett, Randolph-Macon allowed fewer than 15 points won by the Cougars in each set played for the second time this season. The Lemon and Black finished with a .508 hitting percentage, surpassing the .507 mark from earlier this season for its second-best hitting percentage in a single match in program history. The Yellow Jackets' .640 hitting percentage in set two was the highest in any set played this year and Matthews posted a .538 hitting percentage in three sets of play. The junior also compiled the second-most kills in match (seven), a match-high three blocks and two digs.
Against Bridgewater, Matthews finished second on the team in kills (eight) while adding four blocks and a dig. He swung a .389 hitting percentage in the sweep.
In the contest against #9 Southern Virginia, Matthews led the contest with a career-high 21.5 points, amassing a match-high 17 kills and tying the team-high with four blocks. He also posted six digs and a service ace. The junior completed play with a .361 hitting percentage, giving him a .429 across the week. His efforts against SVU resulted in the highest ranked win in program history.
Matthews now has three-or-more blocks in each of his last five matches, including four-or-more in three of those contests.
The Lemon and Black have their next match against Lynchburg on Wednesday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m., for their Green Bandana Match.
