FOREST, Va. – Randolph-Macon junior guard
Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) has been named ODAC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career, following her performances last week.
Smith helped guide RMC to its fourth consecutive 2-0 week, posting wins against two programs that qualified for the ODAC Postseason Tournament.
In their midweek matchup against Virginia Wesleyan, the Yellow Jackets won 54-39, thanks to a game-high five steals from Smith. The junior also poured in a game-high 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Five of her six boards were defensive, as she also helped hold the Marlins to shooting just 31.6 percent from the field, including 20.0 percent from three-point range.
Over the weekend, Smith amassed four steals in Randolph-Macon's 55-42 win at Roanoke, while also adding game-highs in points (15) and rebounds (10). Nine of her 10 rebounds were on the defensive glass, as she also added a block and an assist. This was her first career double-double with points and rebounds and second career double-double overall. Thanks to her efforts, the Lemon and Black held the Maroons to a minimal 26.4 shooting percentage from the field, including 19.0 percent from deep.
Throughout the week, Smith totaled a conference-high nine steals, giving her 52 this season. The guard has now reached 50-or-more steals in each of her three seasons played. Additionally, she reeled in 16 rebounds, marking the most she has secured in a two-game span in her career. Furthermore, she led a Yellow Jacket unit that allowed 81 total points, the second-lowest two game total this season.
Smith and the Yellow Jackets are allowing only 54.8 points per game in the 2025-26 season, good for third in the conference. They will be back in action on Wednesday, February 25, as they will host Virginia Wesleyan for an ODAC Quarterfinal contest at 7:00 p.m.
