How it Happened
  • The Yellow Jackets got kills from Allison Lach (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) and Avery Jastrzemski (Richmond, Va./Goochland), before a block between Jastrzemski and Olivia Roark (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day School) gave the squad a 5-4 edge. The Cougars responded with a 6-1 run to capture a 9-6 lead, forcing a timeout from the Lemon and Black. Olivia Leonard (Richmond, Va./The New Community School) supplied three kills in four points before Lach and Karlie Morris (King and Queen County, Va./Middlesex) joined for a block, igniting an 8-0 run to reach a 15-11 edge. Once Caitlin Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) went on to record an ace, Leonard smashed another pair of kills to end the 10-0 run. Ellie Rock (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) used an ace which led to kills from Roark and Smith to close set one, 25-15.
  • Kills from Leonard and Jastrzemski and a Lach ace put the home team up 3-1. Leonard dropped a service ace in off the net and Roark rifled a kill, increasing the lead to 7-3. Morris provided two kills and Lach tallied one of her own and a booming ace but the Cougars retaliated with a 6-0 run to pull within one, down 14-15 at the media timeout. Jastrzemski stopped the slide with a kill down the line and both Lach and Roark followed suit with kills to keep the momentum. Averett was then forced into a timeout once it was trailing 16-20, with Mia Goode (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) registering a kill and an ace. RMC cruised to take set two, 25-16 on a 9-0 run, with Roark denying two AU attempts and Lach and Smith each posting a block.
  • Randolph-Macon got aces from Smith and Leonard early in the third set, propelling it to an 8-4 lead. Goode joined the group with an ace, allowing Roark and Lach to follow with a block, running the lead up to 13-6. The Lemon and Black reached the media timeout with a 15-7 lead, thanks to a 7-1 run. Josie Osborne (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Prep Academy) checked in and ripped a kill and Lach posted yet another service ace, leading to a 5-1 run which also featured kills from Roark and Jastrzemski. Randolph-Macon went on to take set three, 25-14, thanks to kills from Jastrzemski and Roark.
