How it Happened
  • The Yellow Jackets' offense clicked to start the game, as they opened up a 9-2 lead just 4:10 in, highlighted by layups from McKenzie Matheny (Fairfax Station, Va./West Springfield) and Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes). With 3:25 remaining in the quarter, Audra Petty hit a three before also converting on a jump shot, bringing her team within one, down 10-11. Smith found Matheny for a layup to get RMC back on the right track, before Erin Porter (Virginia Beach, Va./Kettle Run) nailed RMC's first three of the day, pushing her team out to a 16-12 lead. The Lemon and Black defense held Lynchburg without a field goal for the final 2:46, entering the second quarter up, 17-12.
  • The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 26-14 within the first 2:52 of the second, as Riley White (Hamilton Va./Virginia Academy) converted on a layup and three-ball during the scoring run. The Hornets started to find their groove in the middle of the frame, as a three-pointer from Brooke Cason helped Lynchburg get back down 19-26 with 6:09 before the half. Then, Madison Langdon (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) got her squad back on the right track, as Liz Wyrick (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) found Langdon for a triple, giving the Yellow Jackets a 29-21 cushion with 3:54 to go. The Yellow Jackets went into the break, up 33-25, after a layup from Smith and midrange jumper from Wyrick.
  • The two programs traded layups for the first 4:07, until Smith nailed a triple and hit a layup on the next possession, giving the Lemon and Black a 41-29 lead. After some impressive play from the junior guard, Matheny then rejected Petty for her fourth block of the game, keeping RMC ahead by double-digits. The Hornets then put together a 9-0 run with 3:00 left in the third, after two layups and free throws from Kate Littlejohn. Porter killed the run with her second triple of the afternoon, giving her team a 44-38 lead with 2:44 to go. The Yellow Jackets entered the fourth quarter up 47-40, after free throws from Wyrick and Matheny.
  • Within the first minute of the fourth, Porter laced her third shot from downtown, giving her team a 10-point lead. Even though a layup from White gave the Lemon and Black a 12-point advantage, the Hornets got within six, down 48-54 after three layups with 4:41 remaining. White regained a 58-49 lead for her team after a deuce and a free throw, before Lynchburg closed the gap to 52-58. The guards continued to produce, as both Smith and White hit layups before two free throws from Porter helped RMC seal a 68-58 victory.
