First Half Scoring Onslaught Guides #2 Men's Hoops Past Salisbury


ASHLAND, Va. - Randolph-Macon Men's Basketball outscored Salisbury 41-16 in the first half, defeating the Sea Gulls 91-70 in the RMC Coaches Tournament Championship on Tuesday afternoon. 

The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Randolph-Macon took an early 4-0 lead with back-to-back lay-ups by Jabril Robinson (Rockville, Va./South Kent Prep) and Malcolm Hodges (Richmond, Va./Monacan). The Sea Gulls answered with two straight three-pointers by Jamison Graves and Tyler Ball to swing the lead their way 6-4 with 16:52 left in the opening half. Robinson knocked down a triple to spring the Yellow Jackets into the lead and on a 27-0 scoring run. Salisbury was held scoreless for over ten minutes, until the 5:23 mark of the half. Eight different players scored during the monumental run, led by Robinson and Jack Loyd (Fairfax, Va./Flint Hill) combining for ten points. The scoring onslaught was capped off by a three ball by Brady Lam (Ruckersville, Va./Willam Monroe) to give Randolph-Macon a 31-6 lead. In the final five minutes of the half, both teams scored ten points and the Yellow Jackets took an eye popping 41-16 lead into the locker room. The first half also saw Randolph-Macon record a 17-for-23 (.739) shooting clip. 
  • In the second half, Salisbury started quickly on the offensive end and tallied four straight points, still trailing 41-20. The Lemon and Black scored 12 of the next 16 points with Robinson accounting for eight points, growing the lead to 53-24 with 15:30 on the clock. Elijah Bryan kept the Sea Gulls in the game, contributing four points of a 7-0 run, but Hodges stopped the run with a lay-up, setting the score at 55-31 with 13:55 remaining. Randolph-Macon kept a steady 20 plus point lead until Ball made a bucket for Salisbury at the 5:03 mark, showing a 75-56 lead for the Yellow Jackets. Ty Showalter (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) pushed the lead back to 20 plus with a three-pointer plus a foul shot soon after. The fouls racked up early in the second half and both teams traded foul shots and field goals for the remainder of the game. Randolph-Macon used a huge first half to defeat the Sea Gulls by a score of 91-70. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Randolph-Macon shot 72.3 percent from the floor, as Salisbury knocked down 48.0 percent of its shots. The Lemon and Black went 9-of-16 (.563) from behind the arc, compared to the Sea Gulls shooting 7-of-18 (.389) from long range.  
  • The Yellow Jackets and Sea Gulls both had 23 rebounds in the entire game.
  • Hodges led all scorers with 18 points. The junior shot 8-for-9 from the field shooting and added two steals to his line. 
  • Showalter had a career high in points with 17 in the game. The sophomore also pulled down four rebounds and had two steals. 
  • Robinson was the final Yellow Jacket to end in double figures with 15 points. The senior dished out five assists, grabbed three rebounds, had two steals and blocked a shot. 
  • Keishawn Pulley Jr. (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's School) and Liam Joyce (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) both ended the game with nine points. 
  • Loyd had a career afternoon in points with eight to go with two three-pointers. 
For the Record:
  • Randolph-Macon has now scored 80 or more points in four straight games. 
  • Jabril Robinson was named the RMC Coaches Tournament "Most Valuable Player" 
  • Ty Showalter and Malcolm Hodges were named to the All-Tournament team.
