How it Happened
- Lynchburg got out to a quick start, pulling out to a 11-4 lead to force a timeout from Randolph-Macon after a service ace. Coming out of the break, kills from Grace Ostvig (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) and Mia Goode (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) helped the Yellow Jackets string together four consecutive points to put the team down, 8-11. The Hornets responded by winning five of the next six points, including four kills to force RMC's second timeout of the set while still trailing, 9-16. The Lemon and Black found its rhythm after the timeout, winning six of the sets' next nine points, thanks to kills from Ostvig and Ella Courtney (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) to get back within four. Even though the Yellow Jackets were able to surge late due to kills from Milly Mach (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory), Marie Hall (High Point, N.C./Southwest Guilford) and Caitlin Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School), Lynchburg took set one, 25-21.
- Randolph-Macon settled in at the start of set two, tying Lynchburg 4-4 through the first eight points of the set. After Ostvig tied the set, the Hornets secured five-straight points, forcing RMC's first timeout of the set down 9-4. Similar to set one, the Lemon and Black showed resilience emerging from the timeout, winning six of the set's next eight points after two kills from Ostvig and one from Smith. Down one at 10-11, the Yellow Jackets could not obtain the lead, as Lynchburg forced the Yellow Jackets into their second timeout of the set after earning six consecutive points. While RMC got two kills from Goode down the stretch, LU captured the second set, 25-15.
- The Yellow Jackets got out to an early 4-2 lead after two kills from Goode and one from Ostvig. After a few errors from the road team, Lynchburg was able to even the set at six a piece before making some substitutes. Then, the Hornets erupted for a seven-point run, forcing Randolph-Macon into its first timeout of the set while down 4-11. The Yellow Jackets were then able to get within four, while still down 10-14 after a service ace from Smith. Unfortunately for RMC, it used its second timeout of the set after three quick points from Lynchburg. Out of the timeout, the two programs traded kills but four kills in the final five points of the set helped Lynchburg take a 25-14 win in set three.
