RMC Splits Matches with New York and John Jay

NEW YORK, NY.  After a hard-fought battle, the Yellow Jackets were able to take a set off of New York, losing 3-1 in sets in the early match. The Lemon and Black then went on to win a competitive second match against John Jay, securing a 3-1 victory.

How it Happened vs. New York
  • New York started the first set with four consecutive points, before a kill from Mia Goode (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and three attack errors put the Yellow Jackets tied with the Bobcats, 4-4. Then, Catilin Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) fired back-to-back service aces and Grace Ostvig (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) tallied back-to-back kills, putting the Lemon and Black up, 11-5. New York then forced a handful of attack errors, tying the set 14-14. While Karlie Morris (King and Queen County, Va./Middlesex) and Marie Hall (High Point, N.C./Southwest Guilford) were able to register kills down the stretch, the Bobcats continued their momentum to close the first set, 25-20.
  • While Morris and Goode posted the first two points for RMC in set two, NYU jumped out to a 6-2 lead after earning four kills in six points. After Goode posted her second kill of the set, the Bobcats applied the pressure, generating a 14-4 lead after forcing some attack errors from the Yellow Jackets. While a service ace from Ostvig helped to stop the run, NYU extended its lead to 22-8. Then, RMC earned five-straight points, including back-to-back kills from Goode, to put her squad down 22-13. Despite the burst, NYU went on to capture the third set, 25-13.
  • RMC had its best start to a set in the third, as Goode and Morris each posted kills to help the Yellow Jackets to an early 5-3 lead. After NYU tied the set at nine, the Yellow Jackets erupted for six consecutive points, highlighted by three-straight service aces from Smith. While the Bobcats were able to end the run with RMC still ahead 15-10, the road team continue to apply the offensive pressure, as Delaney McDonald (Locust Grove, Va./Locust Grove) put her team up 21-13 after two kills in three points. Even though New York was able to assemble a 9-3 run, a kill from McDonald helped the Yellow Jackets win the third set, 25-22.
  • After dropping the third set, the Bobcats opened the fourth set on a 10-3 run, including seven kills. Then, RMC fought back with two points of its own, with Ostvig tallying her second service ace of the match. Over the next nine rallies, the two programs traded points, with NYU holding a 16-9 lead. While Goode and Morris each supplied kills during the stretch, the Bobcats found themselves with an 19-11 advantage. After back-to-back kills from Goode, NYU went on to capture the set, 25-14 after three consecutive service aces.
Inside the Numbers vs. New York
  • Despite NYU leading RMC in attack errors, 125-115, the Yellow Jackets only committed 21 attack errors, compared to 25 from the Bobcats.
  • The Yellow Jackets let the match in total blocks (nine-to-eight) and block assists (14-12). They also tied the Bobcats with two solo blocks each.
  • Smith tied for a match-high five aces and also led the Yellow Jackets in assists (21). Smith's 21 assists were also the second-most recorded in the match.
  • Ostvig recorded a career-high 12 digs in the match. This was also the first match that she recorded greater than 10 in her career.
  • Morris finished with a match-high five blocks. Milly Mach (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and Goode each posted three blocks in the morning match.
How it Happened vs. John Jay
  • John Jay created a 7-2 lead to open the first set, including four consecutive kills. Then, RMC went on a 7-2 run of its own to even the set at nine a piece. Trinity Makley (Morrisville, N.C./Panther Creek) posted back-to-back service aces and Ostvig fired two kills in the run. Despite the Bloodhounds getting out to a 14-10 lead, RMC fought for a 16-15 lead after Morris and Hall each tallied kills. After John Jay leveled the set 16-16, the two teams traded points until back-to-back kills from the Bloodhounds put them up, 23-21. The Yellow Jackets then won five consecutive points to earn a 25-24 advantage after a clutch service ace from Smith. Despite an incredible effort, the Yellow Jackets were unable to capture the first set, with the Bloodhounds winning, 31-29.
  • The second set opened more even than the first, with the two teams tied at five through 10 points, thanks to multiple kills from Ostvig. Later in the set, the Bloodhounds and Yellow Jackets alternated kills for 11-straight points, until back-to-back kills from the Lemon and Black tied the set, 12-12. Two kills from Goode over a four-point span helped to keep the set tied at 16.The teams remained within a point of each other until a kill from Goode put RMC up, 22-20. In another close set, the Yellow Jackets were able to secure the victory, 25-22, after kills from Ella Courtney (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) and Goode.
  • Much like the first two sets, set three was back and forth at the start, as the teams found themselves knotted at five once again. Then, kills from Ostvig and Morris, coupled with a service ace from Smith, helped RMC earn a 12-7 lead. Despite the Bloodhounds getting back within one, a kill from Milly Mach (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) capped of a 4-0 run for RMC, putting them up 16-11. While John Jay was able to get within two with the Yellow Jackets leading 20-18, three kills from Goode helped propel the Lemon and Black to a 25-21 set three win.
  • Randolph-Macon opened the fourth set on the offensive, jumping out to a 7-3 lead after three-straight kills from three different individuals. John Jay was able to close the gap toward the middle of the set, getting to within two as the Yellow Jackets held a 10-8 advantage. RMC then poured on the pressure, posting six consecutive points to create a 16-8 lead. On the run, Lily Macias (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), Goode and Mach all recorded kills. Despite a few service aces from the Bloodhounds to put them within four points, kills form Goode, Ostvig and Courtney helped RMC secure the set and match, with a score of 25-21 in the fourth set.
Inside the Numbers vs. John Jay
  • The Yellow Jackets led the Bloodhounds 64-58 in kills, 59-54 in assists, 52-41 in digs and nine-to-seven in service aces.
  • Smith's 51 assists and four aces were both match-high marks. Her four block also tied for the most in the match. Her 51 assists ties her career-high.
  • After posting a career-high 12 digs against New York, Ostvig set a new career-high with 15 digs.
  • Goode's match-high 21 kills also marks a career-high. She now has recorded 10-or-more kills in each of her past two matches played.
