Women's Hoops gets Key ODAC Win on Senior Day

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon women's basketball hosted senior day as part of a double-header in Crenshaw Gym on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets led from start to finish in a key win over Randolph, 54-44.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 54, Randolph 44

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Randolph-Macon College/Crenshaw Gym

Records: Randolph-Macon (17-6, 13-3 ODAC), Randolph (17-7, 11-6 ODAC)

How it Happened:

  • RMC's defense was smothering for the first quarter, not allowing a single point until nearly eight minutes into the game as they opened an 8-0 lead before the WildCats were able to get on the board. Freshman Jane Elkins (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) made a layup as time expired in the first frame to extend the lead to 10 for RMC.
  • The Yellow Jackets maintained the lead in the second quarter, as a Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) jumper made it 25-11, proving to be the largest lead of the half. RMC held onto a 25-14 lead at halftime after a stellar defensive first 20 minutes.
  • The offense came out firing to open the second half, as the Lemon and Black pushed the lead out to 23 with four minutes to go in the third quarter.
  • Despite a comeback attempt from Randolph, RMC was able to slow the pace to shorten the game, holding onto their double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. RMC held an 18-point lead after freshman Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) buried a jumper, but Randolph scored the final eight points of the game to bring the final deficit to 10, ending 54-44.

By the Numbers:

  • Another stellar night for junior Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) in the stat sheet, posting 16 points, nine rebounds, and three assists to lead the Yellow Jackets.
  • Cheridan Hatfield found success on her senior day, picking up eight points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
  • Jane Elkins was the other RMC player in double figures with 10 points, four of which came from the free throw line.
  • RMC outrebounded the WildCats 37-29, including 12 offensive rebounds to control the boards.
  • The Lemon and Black shared the ball well, finishing the night with 17 assists.
