RMC Mourns Passing of Coach Paul Webb

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon community was saddened to learn of the passing of former men's basketball coach Paul Webb on Friday, Dec. 8.

Coach Webb graduated from William & Mary in 1951. He played basketball and baseball for the Tribe. Following graduation, Coach Webb spent two seasons in minor league baseball. He coached and taught at Highland Springs High School.

In 1956, Coach Webb started his coaching career at RMC. In 19 seasons, the Yellow Jackets posted a record of 315-158. He guided RMC to seven Mason-Dixon Southern Division titles, three Mason-Dixon Conference championships and four trips to the NCAA Tournament. The 1963-64 squad won the first Mason-Dixon Conference championship by a Virginia school. RMC went to the NCAA Tournament in 1965 for the first time in program history.

Following his time in Ashland, Coach Webb was head coach at Old Dominion University for 10 seasons. His career mark was 511-257 in 29 seasons as a head coach. When he retired in 1985, Coach Webb was the sixth-winningest collegiate basketball coach in the nation. He was the all-time winningest college basketball coach in the state of Virginia until his mark was surpassed in 1998.

Coach Webb's sons Doug and Eddie both attended RMC. Coach Webb ran basketball camps for more than 55 years and was assisted by Eddie in recent years.

Coach Webb was inducted into the William & Mary Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982, the Old Dominion University Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1993, the Randolph-Macon Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997, and the Highland Spring High School Hall of Fame in 1999. Coach Webb received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Norfolk Sports Club in 2018.
