ASHLAND, Va. -- The Randolph-Macon women's swimming team had a dual meet with Marymount as the second leg of their back-to-back during the weekend. R-MC dominated their way to a 191-71 victory.
Individually, R-MC garnered an impressive 10 golds, eight silvers, and nine bronzes on the day. The Yellow Jackets grabbed all three podium spots in both backstroke events and the 100 IM.
Leading the way was Melina Christou (Smithfield, Va./Menchville) winning three events, the 500 free, which she finished in 5:43.77, the 50 fly, finishing in 28.53, and the 200 IM, finishing in 2:16.31 to cap off the impressive day.
Katelyn Vieni (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) had two golds on the day, finishing first in the 100 free in 56.72 as well as in the 100 IM, which her time of 1:02.18 ranks 46th nationally among swimmers across all divisions. She also finished second in the 50 back (30.19).
Kelsey James (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) was the third R-MC swimmer to have two golds on the day, finishing first in the 50 back in 29.64 and the 100 back in 1:02.75.
Caroline Russell (Lynchburg, Va./EC Glass) dominated the 1000 free, winning by over a minute in the race, finishing in 11:07.61. She also finished second in both the 100 back (1:02.83) and a personal best in the 100 IM (1:05.95).
Emily Fritz (Reston, Va./South Lakes) also had a gold medal on the day, finishing the 100 breast in 1:10.14. She also finished second in the 50 breast (32.58) and the 100 IM (1:06.35).
Sophia Hanson (Hamilton, Va./Woodgrove) rounded out the gold medals with a 32.57 time to finish first in the 50 breast. She also finished third in the 100 breast (1:12.36).
Kelsey Craighead (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic) picked up two silvers, once in the 50 free (26.33) and another in the 100 free (57.07).
Likewise, Tess Williams (Midlothian, Va./James River) found the podium twice, finishing second in the 50 fly (28.64) and the 100 fly (1:03.99).
Maddy Sayasithsena (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) finished third twice, once in the 50 back (30.53) and again in the 100 back (1:05.78). Dagny Hudgins (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) also finished third in the 50 free (27.01) and the 200 IM (2:27.73).
Katie Herzberger (Kernersville, Va./Bishop McGuinness) got two bronzes today, finishing third in the 500 free (5:56.27) and the 1000 free (12:08.89). Claire Tanner (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) grabbed third in the 100 fly (1:06.45).
In relays, R-MC won both events, finishing the 400 medley relay in 4:18.82 with a team of Sayasithsena, Hanson, Christou, and Kierra Parsons (Akron, Pa./Ephrata). The Yellow Jackets also finished first in the 400 free (3:55.39) with a team of Russell, Vieni, James, and Craighead. The team of Williams, Hudgins, Parsons, and Anna Sprott (Hampton, Va./Peninsula Catholic) also finished second in the same event in 3:58.64.
R-MC will be back in action Jan. 21 for a Senior Day meet with Washington and Lee at 1:00 p.m. in Ashland.
