Hatfield's 18 Points Lifts Women's Hoops Over Royals

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team rang in the new year with a conference matchup with Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday night for their first home game since Dec. 10. The Yellow Jackets continued their winning streak with a 65-30 win over the Royals.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 65, Eastern Mennonite 30

Records: Randolph-Macon (8-4, 5-1 ODAC), Eastern Mennonite (7-6, 2-4 ODAC)

How it Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to a fast start by R-MC on both sides of the ball. The Yellow Jackets got four points from a trio of players to lead them to a 14-4 lead after 10 minutes.
  • Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) took over the second quarter with nine points including a trio of free throws to fuel R-MC to a 16-point halftime lead, 29-13.
  • The offense for R-MC came alive in the third frame, as the Lemon and Black shot 57% in the quarter, getting contributions from six different players in the scoring column, extending the lead further. R-MC led 49-21 after the third.
  • The fourth frame was more of the same, as Lilly Davis (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) notched her first career points on a triple with four and a half minutes to play to extend the lead to 36. She also added three rebounds, two assists, and two steals, filling the stat sheet in the fourth. The Yellow Jackets continued their solid night on their way to a 65-30 victory. 

By the Numbers:

  • R-MC hit a team season high 27 shots for another season high 65 points. They shot 41% from the field in the win.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a season high 53 rebounds and 20 offensive rebounds, led by Paige Anderson (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) with eight. Hatfield and Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) each had seven boards.
  • Hatfield posted a season high 18 points in the win, her second straight game in double figures. She also had seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals to her name.
  • Olivia Murray (Moseley, Va./Manchester) tied a career high with four points off the bench. She also added two rebounds.

Up Next:

Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Saturday, January 7 at 2:00 p.m. for an ODAC contest against Roanoke in Ashland.
