Kagey's 28-Point Double Double Fuels Women's Hoops Past Hornets

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team hosted the rematch of the 2022 ODAC championship against Shenandoah on Wednesday night. RMC pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 65-49.

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 65, Shenandoah 49

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Randolph-Macon College/Crenshaw Gym

Records: Randolph-Macon (13-5, 10-2 ODAC), Shenandoah (11-7, 7-5 ODAC)

How it Happened:

  • RMC opened on a quick 4-0 spurt to begin the game, but neither team mustered up much offense for the rest of the frame until RMC went on a 8-2 run to end the quarter. The Hornets shot just 11% in the first quarter as the Yellow Jackets held a 12-6 lead through 10 minutes.
  • The Yellow Jackets built the lead up to 11 mid-way through the second quarter thanks in large part to sophomore Marisa Ziegler (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) knocking down the first triple of the night for RMC, but Shenandoah got a couple baskets late to cut the halftime deficit to five, 26-21.
  • Three minutes into the second half, Shenandoah tied up the game at 30, before RMC went on a 13-4 run to open the lead back to nine. Junior Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) picked up 12 points in the third quarter alone to help fuel RMC to their big lead.
  • The offense didn't stop there for the Yellow Jackets, as RMC shot 54% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter to widen the lead. Five fourth quarter steals led to fast breaks for RMC to run away with a 65-49 win over the Hornets.

By the Numbers:

  • Catherine Kagey had yet another career night, finishing with 28 points, 11 rebounds, four steals, and three assists. She shot 50% from the field and 9-for-11 from the charity stripe.
  • RMC dominated the boards, outrebounding Shenandoah 45-28 in the game, including a 14-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
  • Despite losing the turnover battle 18-16, RMC had 22 points off SU turnovers to their 11, proving to be a big factor in the win.
  • The Yellow Jackets led for 37:44, as Shenandoah never gained the lead, only tying the game twice.
  • Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) was the only other Yellow Jacket in double figures, finishing with 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
