Randolph-Macon Holds Off Hollins In Women's Hoops

(HOLLINS, Va.) – Randolph-Macon held off a furious comeback attempt by Hollins to defeat the hosts on their senior night in ODAC women's basketball action. With the win, the Yellow Jackets guaranteed at least one of the top three seeds in next week's ODAC tournament and are currently tied with Washington & Lee at the top of the league standings.

How It Happened

  • The Lemon and Black led from start to finish as it inundated Hollins with a 13-2 run to open the game. Becca Anthony (Sr., Amelia, Va. / Amelia) opened the surge with a 3-pointer while Haley Pasqualone (Jr., Purcellville, Va. / Loudoun Valley) bookended it with another triple.
  • Hollins attempted to get back into the game with an 8-0 run, but the Jackets' defense stepped up and shut down Hollins for almost 12 minutes. During that time R-MC closed the half on a 16-2 run to head into the halftime break up 29-12, its largest lead of the game. Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) opened up the second quarter with three consecutive layups on assists from Cheridan Hatfield (Sr., Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) and Anthony to fuel the run.
  • After a nearly-even third quarter, Hollins made its move in the fourth and opened the period with a pair of 3-pointers, but Randolph-Macon answered with the next three field goals. A Juliana Park (Fr., Fairfax Station, Va. / Davidson Day) eventually made the score 50-39 with 4:02 left and held off the hosts by sinking all their free throws in the final minute.

Inside The Numbers

  • Kagey led the Jackets with 12 points and shot an impressive 6-of-10 from the field. Hatfield added 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds as well.
  • Speaking of rebounds, Aimee DeBell (Sr., Studley, Va. / St. Gertrude) was a forced underneath all night. She grabbed 14 caroms on the night, the fourth time she's reached double-digit boards this season.
  • The two points allowed by the Yellow Jackets in the second quarter was a season best. The Jackets limited Hollins to just 1-of-13 from the field and kept them scoreless since the 2:00 mark of the first quarter until there were 24 seconds left in the half.
  • Randolph-Macon stayed true to their rebound margin and were 11 better than the hosts with a 42-31 count.
  • Randolph-Macon made Hollins work for all their baskets and allowed them just two assists all night.
  • Hollins was led by Kayla Surles who led the game with 22 points. Tia Tucker added 12 points for the hosts.

Up Next

The Yellow Jackets will return home for the regular season finale against Guilford on Saturday. It will be Senior Day and the annual Back To The Hive game for the Jackets. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
