Women's Hoops Comeback Falls Short in Battle Against Gettysburg

ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon women's basketball team hosted the latter of their back-to-back home games in the R-MC Tip-Off Classic in a contest with Gettysburg. In a fast-paced, closely contested game, the Bullets pulled away late to win 68-59.

The Basics:

Score: Gettysburg 68, Randolph-Macon 59

Records: Gettysburg (1-0, 0-0 Centennial), Randolph-Macon (0-3, 0-0 ODAC)

How it Happened:

  • Randolph-Macon got going early, coming back and taking the lead after being down 7-0.
  • In a high-octance first half, both teams hit a lot of shots, with 39 first quarter points scored between the two teams. Haley Pasqualone (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) and Catherine Kagey (Roanoke, Va./Faith Christian) led the way with eight points a piece in the frame.
  • The second quarter didn't slow down, as both teams kept up the scoring and so did Kagey, adding four more points do get into double figures for the first half, but the Bullets had the lead 42-34 after 20 minutes.
  • Both offenses stalled in the third quarter, combining for 16 points, but R-MC found their way back in it, cutting the lead to four with a quarter to play.
  • Jane Elkins (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) took over the fourth quarter for R-MC, posting seven points and helping the Yellow Jackets pull within one of the Bullets late.
  • Gettysburg was able to get stops and made free throws down the stretch to stretch the lead and seal the win.

Inside the Numbers:

  • R-MC outrebounded the Bullets, 46-40, and had 13 assists as well.
  • The Yellow Jackets outshot the Bullets from the floor, shooting 40.3% from the field to stay on pace with GC.
  • Kagey posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, adding three assists to her credit as well, being the driving force behind a solid game for R-MC.
  • Elkins totaled 13 points, seven of which came in the fourth quarter comeback attempt.
  • Paige Anderson (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) had a solid day, grabbing eight boards to couple with six points.
  • Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) corralled a career high 10 rebounds, joining Kagey with the only two with double-digit boards.

Up Next:

Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Wednesday to travel to Notre Dame (Md.) for a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m.
