Randolph-Macon Ends Regular Season with Twinbill Sweep of Oglethorpe, Birmingham-Southern

ATLANTA, Ga. - Randolph-Macon Women's Volleyball earned a big 3-1 win over non-conference foe Oglethorpe before ending the evening with a 3-2 win over Birmingham-Southern to close out play in the Emory Tournament as well as the regular season for the Yellow Jackets.

The Basics:

Scores: Randolph-Macon 3, Oglethorpe 1 (25-21, 19-25, 26-24, 25-21)
             Randolph-Macon 3, Birmingham-Southern 2 (25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 19-25, 15-11)

Location/Venue: Atlanta, Ga./Woodruff Arena

Records: Randolph-Macon 20-6, Birmingham-Southern 17-8, Oglethorpe 13-12

How It Happened (Match 1 vs. Oglethorpe):

  • Randolph-Macon found themselves up 14-9 midway through the first set, seeing the Yellow Jackets take control of the first set and lay claim to 1-0 lead early.
  • The second set went the way of Oglethorpe as well, as the Stormy Petrels carried the momentum and closed the second set to even it at a set, apiece.
  • It was Grace Parker (Andover, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and Bailey Johnson (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) that had kills to down the stretch of the third set to turn the tide and give R-MC the big 2-1 advantage after Oglethorpe forced extra volleyball in the stanza.
  • The Yellow Jackets answered the call in the fourth set as well, building an early 9-3 advantage before closing the match out while shining on both sides of the net.

Inside The Numbers (Match 1 vs. Oglethorpe):

  • Parker led the way for the Yellow Jackets with 25 kills and 12 digs, enough for a double-double while Leslie Currie (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) tallied 22 digs to shine on the defensive side.
  • Maddie DeCandito (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) found success on the defensive side of the net as well for R-MC, recording 10 digs.
  • Megan Bost (Angier, N.C./West Johnson) was efficient on the other side of the net, recording 12 winners in just 32 swings for a .312 hitting percentage.

How It Happened (Match 2 vs. Birmingham-Southern):

  • Each set was well contested from both sides, but it was the Yellow Jackets that took the 1-0 lead after holding off a late Birmingham-Southern push.
  • It again was Randolph-Macon that recorded the final point in the second set as the Yellow Jackets held BSU to just a .171 hitting percentage.
  • The Panthers would not go away quietly, as the next two sets went their way to force a decisive fifth set to determine the match.
  • Parker made her offense felt in the fifth set, finding four winners in the first-to-15 stanza to lead the R-MC push. 

Inside The Numbers (Match 2 vs. Birmingham-Southern):

  • It was Parker that led the way yet again for Randolph-Macon, recording a team-high 35 kills, while Johnson amassed 15 and Bost had 10 of her own.
  • Currie had a strong showing on the defensive side of the net for the Yellow Jackets, amassing  22 digs while DeCandido found 20 of her own.

Up Next:

  • Randolph-Macon will now turn its attention to postseason play, as the Yellow Jackets finished Old Dominion Athletic Conference play as the fourth seed. R-MC will play host to Bridgewater in the Quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament Wednesday, November 2 inside of Crenshaw Gym. A game time has not yet been determined for that match.
