Box Score (BALTIMORE) – The Randolph-Macon women's volleyball team gave No. 4 Colorado College all it could handle in its first match of the Johns Hopkins Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets fell to the unbeaten Tigers in the four set match, but it wasn't without an impressive showing that saw the Lemon and Black take set three after a thrilling second set where both teams scored over 30 points.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 1, No. 4 Colorado College 3
Venue: Goldfarb Gymnasium (1,100)
Records: Randolph-Macon 4-2, No. 4 Colorado College 9-0
How It Happened
- The Yellow Jackets were in the opening set throughout and held an 18-16 lead after a kill by Sydney Koch (Sr., Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson) and an error by the Tigers. Colorado countered with the next seven points to put it in position to take the first set after the teams split the next following four points.
- The second set looked like volleyball's version of a marathon with both teams scoring over 30 points in a game reminiscent of the scoring rules of the early 2000's. Both teams had multiple chances for the potential game point. The Yellow Jackets' last opportunity came after a Tigers service error and a block by Macguire Gubba (Sr., Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) and Danielle LaRosa (Sr., Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) put the score at 31-30, but Colorado responded with the next three points to go up 2-0.
- The Jackets came out in the third set and made sure it belonged to them as they never trailed after the first point. Five consecutive points capped by a LaRosa kill gave them their largest lead at 15-8 that was equaled after a Koch kill made it 19-12. The Tigers rallied to cut the deficit to one on multiple occasions, but weren't able to tie it as the Jackets won their lone set.
- Colorado jumped out to a 14-5 advantage in the fourth set which forced RMC to play catchup. The Jackets were only able to cut the deficit to five on a couple of occasions as Colorado took the match with a 25-17 win.
