Box Score

(ASHLAND, Va.) – Penny Senior (Jr., Kingston, Jamaica / Meadowbrook) scored his first career hat trick and nearly gave No. 3 Randolph-Macon a thrilling win in the ODAC men's soccer quarterfinals on Tuesday night. However sixth-seeded Guilford was able to overcome it and had a player of its own score a hat trick as the Quakers upset the Yellow Jackets.

The Basics

Score: No. 3 Randolph-Macon 3, No. 6 Guilford 4 (OT)

Venue: Nunnally Field

Records: R-MC 5-3, Guilford 5-2-1

How It Happened:

  • Guilford took an early lead after Kenny Nzekwe scored on a laser shot from the right side at the top of the box that hit the lower side of the cross bar bounced almost straight down beyond the goal line for the score in the 12th minute. Nzekwe added another just over two minutes later to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
  • The Jackets were able to get on the board in the 21st minute as Senior was able to flick it in from just outside the box on an assist from Colton Howell (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen).
  • Senior and Howell connected again for the equalizer in the 56th minute, this time on a set piece. As with most of his assists, Howell perfectly placed another corner and Senior was able to head it inside the far post to tie the game.
  • Senior recorded the hat trick on a well-placed ball by Connor Lorenz (Jr., Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) who served a breaking senior 30 yards down the field. Senior was left 1-on-1 with the keeper and slipped it by him for a 3-2 lead in the 74th.
  • Guilford was quick to tie it up as Sebastian Salas scored just under three minutes later.
  • The game went to overtime where Nzekwe score his hat trick goal on an assist from Jasper Ardinger in the 96th minute.

Inside The Numbers:

  • Shots were nearly even with the Quakers holding a slim 16-14 advantage.
  • Corner kicks favored Randolph-Macon 6-4.
  • Senior's first hat trick gave him his fourth multiple goal game of his collegiate career.
