Men's Soccer Scores OT Victory at Shenandoah

Box Score

(WINCHESTER, Va.) – Randolph-Macon closed the regular season in style as it came from behind to defeat Shenandoah in overtime in ODAC men's soccer competition. The Yellow Jackets now wait to see how the rest of the league plays out and how the brackets lineup for the playoffs next week.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 4, Shenandoah 3 (OT)

Venue: Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium

Records: R-MC 5-2, 5-2 ODAC; SU 1-5-2, 1-4-2 ODAC

How It Happened:

  • The Jackets actually came from behind twice to take the lead in the game as Shenandoah opened the scoring with a goal in the 30th minute.
  • Penny Senior (Jr., Kingston, Jamaica / Meadowbrook) provided the first equalizer just under two minutes later on a set piece. Randolph-Macon was awarded a corner kick, and Colton Howell (Jr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) perfectly placed it from the left side and allowed Senior to head it inside the near post.
  • Another set piece for the Jackets made the score 2-1, and it was a similar set up to the first. A foul on Shenandoah gave the Jackets a free kick about five yards away from the same corner, and Howell was able to perfectly center it, this time on the far post, where Austin Fattizzi (So., Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Collegiate) finished it off with a header.
  • The score remained that way until the second half when Shenandoah found the back of the net once again in the 58th minute. The Hornets proceeded to take the lead in the 77th when Nikolas Como scored.
  • Sure enough, another set piece allowed the Jackets to tie the game at 3-3. This time Howell sent in the corner from the right side and Kodi Tannor (Fr., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) rushed in to flick it in high center in the 83rd minute to help send the game to overtime.
  • In the last minutes of the first overtime, Olo Sembera (Sr., Lima, Peru / George Mason) scored the golden goal on an assist from Tanner. Tanner beat his defender and dribbled up the right side to the end line where he centered the ball. The pass went untouched and past a sliding Hornets defender where Sembera was able to stop it and slip it on the left side of the goalie.

Inside The Numbers:

  • The majority of possession was controlled by Randolph-Macon. As a result the Jackets doubled up the Hornets on shots 24-12. Corners aided the Jackets in similar fashion by a 7-3 count.
  • Howell's three points are the most for him in a game since he scored a pair of goals against Gettysburg. He now has an ODAC-best seven assists in his last six games.
  • Senior's goal put him back in the scoring column and also gives him seven points on the season. Together he and Howell are tied for ninth in the ODAC in points.

Up Next

The Jackets now play the waiting game to see how the rest of the conference plays out. As of this writing, they stand in fourth place with games still to be played this weekend. They have assured themselves a spot in the quarterfinals which are set to begin on Tuesday.
