Box Score (BRIDGEWATER, Va.) – A pair of late-game goals just over two minutes apart lifted Randolph-Macon in its season opener over Bridgewater on a damp Sunday afternoon. It also served as the ODAC opener for the Yellow Jackets, while the Eagles were playing in their second game and fell to 0-1-1 on the year.
The teams were scoreless until the 64th minute when Penny Senior (Jr., Kingston, Jamaica / Meadowbrook) intercepted a goal kick in the circle and passed it on to Chazz Jones (Fr., Trenton, N.J. / Trenton Catholic) at the top of the box. Jones was then able to send it just inside the right post past the outstretched arms of the diving Eagles keeper.
Just over two minutes later, the Jackets took advantage of a set piece as Bogue Cummings (So., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) took a free kick out of trio of players 25 yards out and perfectly placed it inside the upper left 90. Including Senior's shot that triggered the aforementioned goal kick, it was R-MC's first three shots of the half.
It turns out it was all that the Jackets needed, however, as Anthony Ivanov (So., North Brunswick, N.J. / Imaculata) led a stingy back line for the clean sheet. The Eagles were limited to just nine shots on the day, the same as R-MC, and Ivanov was able to make the save on both attempts on target.
The rest of Bridgewater's attempts were few and far between. Most came in first half as the Eagles took only three shots in the second half, one of which came in the final seconds.
The Jackets now set their sights on arch rival Hampden-Sydney for the home opener. Kickoff with the Tigers is set for this Thursday at 7 p.m.
