Park Fires In 28 As Women's Hoops Fall To Mary Wash

Box Score

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – A valiant comeback attempt by the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team came up just short in an overtime battle at Mary Washington Monday evening. The Yellow Jackets came back from 10 down to start the final quarter to force the extra period, but the Eagles got the last of the four lead changes in the extra frame.

A bright spot for RMC came from freshman Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va. / Davidson Day) who exploded for a season best 28 points. Her efforts gave the Yellow Jackets momentum heading into halftime and sparked the comeback in the second half.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 79, (RV) Mary Washington 84

Venue: Ron Rosner Arena

Records: Randolph-Macon 3-2, (RV) Mary Washington 6-1

How It Happened

  • The Yellow Jackets trailed by 10 with 39 seconds to go in the first half, but a jumper by Marisa Ziegler (Fr., Forest Hill, Md. / John Carroll) followed by a buzzer-beating triple by Park sent RMC into the locker room cheering after cutting the aforementioned deficit in half.
  • It was as sign of things to come. Trailing by 11 with 7:41 to go in the game, Park scored a layup and added her third 3-pointer of the game to make the score 66-60 in favor of the Eagles. After Mary Washington answered with an Ashley Martin jumper, Park hit another bonus bomb to put the Lemon and Black within five.
  • A steal and layup by Catherine Kagey (So., Roanoke, Va. / Faith Christian) put the Jackets within two thanks to an and-one free throw, and Park followed with a defensive rebound and another tre to give RMC its first lead at 69-68, its first since the opening bucket of the game.
  • With both teams stopping each other at the end of regulation, overtime was a different story. UMW opened up with a pair of free throws, but Park answered again with yet another triple, her sixth of the game. The Eagles followed with a layup before Cheridan Hatfield (Sr., Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) made one of her own to put the Jackets back in front 79-78 with 3:01 to go. Unfortunately for RMC, that was its final points of the game. Mary Washington came back with a Tory Martin bucket to regain the lead. A layup and a pair of free throws in the final seconds set up the final score.

Inside The Numbers

  • It was by far the best game of Park's young collegiate career. She finished the night with a game-best 28 points and was 10-of-19 from the field. From range she shot at an even better clip where she was 6-for-9.
  • Kagey recorded her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. She added three assists and two steals.
  • Also reaching double figures were Becca Anthony (Sr., Amelia, Va. / Amelia) and Hatfield. Anthony tallied 11 while Hatfield registered 10.
  • The Jackets used the 3-point line to its advantage with 10 triples in the game, their most in a single game this season.
  • The Eagles had a trio of players in double-figures. Martin led the hosts with 24 points and was 10-for-17 on the night. Jordan Carpenter posed problems for the Jackets with a double-double on 12 points and 15 boards.
