Box Score (GREENSBORO, N.C.) – The Randolph-Macon men's soccer team benefited from a second half surge to defeat Guilford on the road in ODAC action Wednesday night. Elijah Lloyd (Jr., Roanoke, Va. / North Cross) was the man of the match as he came up from the defensive side to score a pair of goals on set pieces to lead the offense.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 3, Guilford 0
Venue: Armfield Athletic Center (2,200)
Records: Randolph-Macon 7-2-1, 2-0-1 ODAC; Guilford 5-4, 0-3 ODAC
How It Happened:
- A defensive battle ensued in the opening frame that left both teams scoreless going into the break. Most of the attacking pressure was applied by the Yellow Jackets as they doubled-up the Quakers on shots 8-4. Of the four shots for Guilford, two were on goal with Adam Braithwaite (Fr., Chesterfield, Va. / Matoaca) making the save on both occasions.
- Scoring picked up early in the second with a pair of back-to-back goals by the Lemon and Black. The first came on a set piece with Colton Howell (Sr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) doing the honors from the corner once again. This time Lloyd was on the receiving end and was able to head it just inside the near post in the 53rd minute.
- The second goal came just 80 seconds later following a free kick. Connor Lorenz (Sr., Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) was able to control a long pass near the end line from the restart at midfield and center it left to right it to Chazz Jones (So., Trenton, N.J. / Trenton Catholic). Jones was then able to hammer it home inside the right post.
- The final score also came as a result from a corner kick. This time the Guilford keeper was able to punch it out, but an opportunistic Lloyd was waiting 10 yards out and lob it into the back of the net in the 74th minute.
Inside The Numbers:
- Braithwaite finished the game with five saves to pick up his fifth clean sheet of the season and the sixth for the team overall.
- Lloyd's goals were his first and second for his collegiate career. He previously got in the scoring column with a pair of assists, one of which came earlier this season against Regent.
- Jones scored his third goal of the season and the second time in as many games.
- Lorenz's assist was his second of the year and first since the season opener against Neumann.
- The Jackets' defense limited the ODAC's second-leading goal scorer Kenny Nzekwe to just one shot in the game. RMC outshot the Quakers 21-8 overall in the game. A large part for that was the defensive play of Alec Mowry (Jr., Salem, Va. / Salem).
- Corner kicks also favored the Jackets by a 5-1 margin.
For The Record
- Randolph-Macon is unbeaten in its last five contests with four wins and one draw. Three of those games have been shutouts.
