Men's Soccer Holds Off Rival Hampden-Sydney

Box Score

(FARMVILLE, Va.) – Randolph-Macon started the month of October on the right foot as it held off a late Hampden-Sydney rally to defeat its rival in ODAC action on Saturday evening. The Yellow Jackets and Tigers combined for four goals in the final 22 minutes of play, including three in the final 10.

The Basics

Scores: Randolph-Macon 3, Hampden-Sydney 2

Venue: Hellmuth-Gibson Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 6-2-1, 1-0-1 ODAC; Hampen-Sydney 4-3-1, 1-1-0 ODAC

How It Happened

  • The first goal was set up after Penny Senior (Sr., Kingston, Jamaica / Meadowbrook) was tripped just outside the box on the left side late in the first half. Bogue Cummings (Jr., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) ended up taking the free kick and sliced it just inside the upper left 90 for the 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute.
  • The scoring started to pick up in the final 30 as the remaining four goals came during that time. The Jackets started the offensive outburst with another set piece goal as Bryce Martin (Jr., Chesterfield, Va. / Middletown) capitalized on another perfectly placed corner kick by Colton Howell (Sr., Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen). Howell got his third assist of the season after Martin was able to head it inside the far post in the 68th minute.
  • Hampden-Sydney eventually got on the board in the 81st minute as Boyce Purdie was able to flick a loose ball inside the right post.
  • The Tigers' joy was short-lived, however, as just 93 seconds later Chazz Jones (So., Trenton, N.J. / Trenton Catholic) provided the final Yellow Jackets goal. On a counter attack Jones took a centering pass and put a shot on target that was saved by H-SC's Connor Kitson, but the ricochet returned immediately to Jones who sent it right back to the lower center.
  • It proved to be the game-winning goal as Hampden-Sydney added the final score in the 88th minute as Emory Davis took a long pass from Michael Ogenyi to set up the final.

Inside The Numbers

  • All three goal scorers scored their second goals of the season. Cummings also had a goal and an assist in the win against Mary Baldwin. Martin's goal was his first since he scored in the season opening win against Neumann. Jones also added a score against Mary Baldwin.
  • Howell's assist was his third of the year. He also tallied helpers against Neumann and Mary Baldwin.
  • Overall shots favored the Tigers by a 14-6 margin, but thots on target favored the Lemon and Black. Only four of the Hampden-Sydney shots were on goal, while all six of the Jackets either resulted in a goal or a save.
  • Corner kicks slightly favored the Jackets by a 5-4 margin. Four of them came during the first half.

For The Record

  • The Yellow Jackets now lead the all-time series with Hampden-Sydney 27-18-6. They have won five out of the last seven matchups with their rivals.
  • Randolph-Macon is 3-0-1 in its last four games.
