Box Score ASHLAND, Va- Junior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) shot 63% from the field, making 12 field goals and finishing with a season-high 30 points as Men's Basketball defeated Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon, clinching the outright Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season title for the fourth-straight year.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 72, Washington and Lee 50
Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Crenshaw Gym
Records: R-MC (22-1, 14-0 ODAC), W&L (18-5, 10-4 ODAC)
How it Happened
- Anthony opened the scoring for R-MC with the first bucket of the game, coming right off the tip-off. The Generals responded with five straight points, all within the first 90 seconds. Both teams struggled to find a bucket for about two minutes of play after that. R-MC broke the scoreless streak with two straight buckets, which forced a W&L timeout. But out of the timeout, the teams battled nearly basket-for-basket, leading up to the 7:37 mark. After W&L pulled it to a 14-14 tie, Anthony got a hoop and harm, which started a 10-3 run for R-MC. The Yellow Jackets would maintain a seven-point lead at halftime, helped by a jumper by freshman Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md. / St. Vincent Pallotti) right at the buzzer.
- W&L started out with a basket and a free throw to open the second frame. Senior Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va. / Amelia Academy) answered with a layup, but W&L cut the R-MC lead to three. Over the next minute though, R-MC got on a 7-0 run, which was the difference-maker for the game as W&L could never get on a run of its own to match. The Generals got as close as seven, but Mallory hit a jumper, followed by Anthony scoring two field goals, a basket by Turner and six points for junior Terry Woods (Burlington, N.C. / Burlington School), all part of a 14-3 run for the Yellow Jackets leading up to the 7:00 mark in the frame and giving R-MC a 60-42 lead. R-MC would finish with 12 more points, mostly from the free throw line, en route to the 72-50 win.
By the Numbers

- Mallory added five blocks, including at several critical moments early in the first half and late in the second period, to the delight of the more than 1,000 fans in attendance. It was the second straight game Mallory tallied five rejections.
- Anthony and Woods both collected three steals
- Anthony dished out six assists and picked up seven rebounds. Junior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C. / Northwest Guilford) grabbed eight boards as well.
- R-MC never allowed the Generals to get in front by more than three, which came early in the first half.
- R-MC kept hold of the lead for more than 32 minutes.
For the Record
- R-MC remains the only undefeated team in ODAC play at 14-0, taking a full three-game lead over the team in second, Virginia Wesleyan, which fell to Emory & Henry in double-overtime today.
- The Yellow Jackets have now won 10 games in a row.
- R-MC has now won 11 of its last 13 against the Generals. Randolph-Macon now leads the series 79-12 since 1956.
- The Yellow Jackets honored three seniors today. Turner was joined by Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md. / CM Wright) and Kent Kilgroe (St. Petersburg, Fla. / Shorecrest Prep) in being recognized on the court prior to the game. Bays has collected more than 650 points across his career while Kilgroe shoots nearly 76% from inside-the-arc. Turner leads the ODAC in assist-to-turnover ratio this season.
