Eagles Clip Women's Basketball Wednesday Night

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball kept up with Bridgewater for most of the contest; but it was the first quarter that set the Eagles up to defeat the Yellow Jackets in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday night.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater 69, Randolph-Macon 61

Location/Venue: Bridgewater, Va./Nininger Hall

Records: Bridgewater (5-8, 4-2 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (4-7, 3-3 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Over the first three minutes, Bridgewater was able to grab a five-point lead. The Eagles kept adding to the score, eventually extending it to 13-3 with about five to play in the first frame. The BC lead remained in double-digits, 20-9 heading into the second quarter. Senior Michal Ross (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) tallied a pair of field goals in the first period.
  • After giving up a layup to start the period, R-MC got a quick 6-0 run to cut the BC lead to single digits. But a well-timed three-pointer and additional jumper by Bridgewater helped put the Eagles back in front by 12 with 6:24 to go in the second. The Yellow Jacket defense came on strong though as R-MC would allow just one more bucket to BC for the rest of the period, while adding eight points of their own, leaving the difference at just seven at halftime.
  • Junior Becca Arrington (Amelia, Va. / Amelia Academy) made her mark right from the second half's outset with a big three-pointer to cut the BC lead to four.  The teams traded buckets and possessions for much of the middle stages of the frame until senior Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) hit a layup to cut the BC advantage to just three with under six to play in the period. BC got a 6-0 run leading up to the three-minute mark though, which helped put the Eagles up by nine, which is what the difference remained heading into the final quarter.
  • The nine-point lead for Bridgewater remained the standard for much of the fourth frame. BC did get a three-pointer to go ahead by 12 early, but Ross knocked it back down to single digits with a bucket-plus-one situation about a minute later. Senior Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C. / Halifax Academy) and Woods hit three big field goals with under 6:00 to play to bring Randolph-Macon within four. But that was as close as the Yellow Jackets got as BC was able to use that lofty first-quarter to secure the win 69-61.

Inside The Numbers

  • Ross led the team with 19 points. She added six rebounds. She had six of the final nine points for the Yellow Jackets in the fourth quarter beginning around the 4:00-to-go point.
  • Woods and Williams both tallied double-doubles, each with 16 points. Woods added 16 rebounds, while Williams tallied ten boards. It marked Williams' seventh double-double, with Woods grabbing her second. Woods tallied season-highs for points and rebounds tonight as well.
  • Arrington added six points and five rebounds.
  • Woods also led the team in steals, grabbing a season-high six tonight.
  • Woods and Williams both had two blocks.
  • Williams led the team in assists with four. Sophomore Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) added three assists and four steals to the final figures also. She hit the other of R-MC's three-pointers with just seconds left in the game.
  • The game was originally set to be played Tuesday night, but was moved due to snow in the Shenandoah Valley yesterday.
