Women's Basketball

Entire Starting Lineup Crosses Double-Digits For Women's Basketball

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va. – All five starters scored in double-digits, led by senior Michal Ross (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen), who tallied 22 as Women's Basketball won a road matchup against conference foe Eastern Mennonite.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 89, Eastern Mennonite 56

Location/Venue: Harrisonburg, Va./Yoder Arena

Records:  Randolph-Macon (7-8, 6-4 ODAC), Eastern Mennonite (2-12, 1-8 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • The pace of play was quick to start for both teams. Any move one team made, the other responded nearly in lockstep. Sophomore Cheridan Hatfield (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) had a couple of big three-pointers, but by the end of the quarter, R-MC had just a one-point lead.
  • That lockstep lasted deep into the second quarter. Ross had a pair of buckets and senior Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C. / Halifax Academy) had a three-pointer, but EMU matched the Yellow Jackets in every moment leading up to the six-minute mark. But from there, the Yellow Jackets began to take control. R-MC went on a 16-6 run over the rest of the half and took a ten-point lead into the halftime break.
  • The Yellow Jackets' vice grip on the game kicked into high gear in the third quarter. Over the first five minutes, the R-MC defense shut out the Royals, allowing just a single free throw. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets put up 19 before EMU got another field goal. R-MC continued to pour it on, scoring 28 in total in the frame, while allowing just nine.
  • Junior Becca Arrington (Amelia, Va. / Amelia Academy) scored two baskets in a row, including a trey over the first few moments of the fourth quarter. EMU got a 6-0 run through the middle of the period, but it was broken by freshman Haley Pasqualone (Purcellville, Va. / Loudoun Valley) hitting a three with about 2:15 to go in the game. Sophomore Peyton Humphreys (Lexington, Ky. / Paul Laurence Dunbar) hit R-MC's last shot with about 30 seconds to go, helping to finalize the score at 89-54.

Inside The Numbers

  • R-MC's starting five each scored double-digits. The group was led by Ross with 22, while Arrington added 14. Williams finished with 12, with Hatfield and fellow sophomore Aimee DeBell (Studley, Va. / Saint Gertrude) tallying 10.
  • Humphreys led the team with eight rebounds. Williams added seven, while DeBell, Ross and Hatfield all threw in five each.
  • Ross, Arrington and freshman Devan Conrad (Parkville, Md. / St. Paul's School for Girls) each had two steals.
  • DeBell and Williams each had two blocks. Freshman Kennedy Cornick (New Windsor, Md. / Francis Scott Key) added a huge block in the fourth quarter that sent the officials on a search for the basketball into the depths of Yoder Arena. Pasqualone and Conrad added one block apiece as well.
  • Arrington led the team with four assists. Ross and Williams each dished out three as well. Sophomore Janelle De Guzman (Raleigh, N.C. / St. Thomas More Academy) and junior Elise Knobloch (Glenville, Pa. / Delone Catholic) collected two assists each.

Williams New Program Block Leader

Recently, Williams became the program's top blocker. On Saturday, January 11 against Guilford, Williams' first block, which came moments into the second quarter, gave her 253 blocks for her career, which set a new program record. Williams surpassed Emily Crider, who played from 2001-2005. Williams now has 261 blocks after three games since setting the record.
