Box Score ASHLAND, Va.- Seniors Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C/Halifax Academy) and Michal Ross (Glen Allen, Va/Glen Allen) each tallied 18 points, with Williams recording her ninth double-double on the year, but it wasn't enough to slow down the Maroons as Women's Basketball fell at home to Roanoke 77-69 on Saturday afternoon.
The Basics:
Score: Roanoke 77, Randolph-Macon 69
Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Crenshaw Gym
Records: Randolph-Macon 6-8, 5-4 ODAC; Roanoke 12-4, 7-2 ODAC
How it Happened:
- The Yellow Jackets came out strong over the opening minutes of the first quarter going on an immediate 7-2 run, led by a pair of layups by Ross. After some early turnovers, the Maroons responded with an 12-2 run to put the score at 14-9. A pair of late free throws by sophomore Aimee DeBell (Studley, Va/Paint Gertrude) got the Yellow Jackets within one at the end of the quarter.
- Despite an early 8-4 run to start the quarter for Roanoke, senior forward Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va/Trinity) helped return the pace to the Yellow Jackets with her first bucket of the contest. That basket was followed by a Ross layup to get R-MC back to a one-point deficit around the three-minute mark of the first half. Two late free throws by sophomore guard Peyton Humphreys (Lexington, Ky/Paul Laurence Dunbar) helped R-MC get back to just a one-point deficit once again, trailing 28-27 going into halftime.
- A minute into the third quarter, senior Kelly Williams completed a three-point play followed by Ross hitting a layup to give R-MC their largest lead of the contest since the seven-minute mark of the opening quarter. Despite the early outburst from halftime, R-MC went cold from the field as Roanoke scored 22 over the final stretches of the third quarter compared to R-MC's 12.
- Roanoke began the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run pushing its lead to 14, the largest of the contest for either team. Sophomore guard Cheridan Hatfield (Fisherville, Va/Wilson Memorial) drained her first three-pointer of the contest, followed by five straight points from Williams to pull R-MC back within five around the four minute to go mark. A late three-pointer by freshman Haley Pasqualone (Purcellville, Va/Loudoun Valley) wasn't enough to complete the comeback as the Maroons went on to win the game 77-69.
