How It Happened

  • Senior Kelsey Wisner (York, Pa./Central York) made a layup to start the scoring, but that would be the only field goal in the first quarter for the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore Becca Arrington (Amelia, Va./Amelia Academy) had one free throw and Wisner hit two as R-MC trailed 11-5 after one period.

SU led 22-8 before Arrington and senior Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va./Heritage) both hit a pair of free throws to make it 22-12 with 1:35 left. Wade answered a bucket by SU with a basket of her own and R-MC trailed 24-14 at intermission. Wisner and Wade both had four points in the first half.
  • SU had the first five points of the third quarter before a layup by Arrington made it 29-16 with 6:10 left in the period. Steals and layups by junior Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va./Trinity) and Ross pulled R-MC within nine at 33-24 with 55 seconds left. The Hornets had the final three points of the period and took a 36-24 lead after three.
  • The Hornets scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to go up 44-24 before a bucket in the paint by freshman Aimee DeBell (Studley, Va./Saint Gertrude) stopped the run. Woods had a pair of buckets in the final three minutes as SU claimed the 58-41 win.
