Last Second Shot Dooms Women's Basketball At Roanoke

Box Score

SALEM, Va. – The Yellow Jackets overcame a 12-point deficit, but in the end, the Roanoke Maroons got a final shot to fall with just seconds remaining to doom Women's Basketball in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest Tuesday evening.

The Basics

Score: Roanoke 69, Randolph-Macon 68

Location/Venue: Salem, Va./Cregger Center

Records: Roanoke (3-1, 2-0 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (1-4, 0-2 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Randolph-Macon earned the first points of the game, but the Maroons were able to score eight straight over the first four minutes of the contest. R-MC got a pair of buckets back over the next three minutes, but RC managed to gain a pair of three-pointers along with another bucket to put themselves ahead eight with about two minutes to go. The Maroons took a 20-11 lead into the second frame.
  • RC was able to add to the lead early in the second quarter, earning a 12-point advantage three separate times over the first four minutes. But R-MC did not let it grow past that and went on an 11-5 run itself to end the period. The run was sustained by the entire team as seniors Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va. / Trinity) and Michal Ross (Glen Allen, Va. / Glen Allen) as well as juniors Becca Arrington (Amelia, Va. / Amelia Academy) and Elise Knobloch (Glenville, Pa. / Delone Catholic) all got points on the board in the final minutes of the frame. Roanoke's lead was just six at halftime.
  • Woods and Arrington earned points in the first few moments of the third quarter. But Roanoke again built a lead of more than ten points over the next six minutes. Again, R-MC proved to be strong in playing from behind. Ross scored four points to cut the lead to six and senior Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C. / Halifax Academy) added two free throws to cut it to a 44-40 Roanoke lead. Williams made a layup to close the gap even more with about a minute to go, but an RC three-pointer in the final seconds left the Maroon lead at five.
  • Roanoke started the frame on a 7-2 run leading up to an R-MC timeout with 6:33 to go. Roanoke pushed the lead out to eight with 5:16 to go, but the Yellow Jackets pushed back with a 7-0 run of their own to get within one with about 3:30 to go. After fighting from behind the entire contest, R-MC earned its first lead since the opening period on a bucket from Arrington with about two-and-a-half to play. Both teams traded buckets and free throws over the final minutes, playing to a 67-67 tie with 48 seconds to go. Williams earned a free throw with about 30 seconds left, but Roanoke's Rose Sande got a final shot to fall in the waning seconds to win the game for the Maroons.

Inside The Numbers

  • Williams earned her second double-double of the season, gaining 19 points and 11 rebounds.
