Women's Volleyball Splits Day At Colorado College Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Randolph-Macon Women's Volleyball earned a win against Johnson & Wales (Denver), but fell to the eighth-ranked Colorado College Tigers Friday. The matches were the first two for the Yellow Jackets in the 2019 Colorado College Invitational.

Randolph-Macon 3, Johnson & Wales (Denver) 0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-15)

In the first set, R-MC used a 7-2 run through the middle of the frame to take the lead and advanced the lead from there to win 25-19.

In the second set, R-MC's lead was never in danger as the Yellow Jackets got ahead 5-1, thanks to a pair of service aces from freshman Grace Parker (Andover, N.J. / Pope John XXIII). A 4-0 run in the middle of the set advanced R-MC's lead to 17-10 and the Yellow Jackets won the frame 25-18.

In the third set, a service ace by Parker again pushed R-MC out in front. The freshman later made three kills in a row and senior Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) collected a service ace to give R-MC a commanding lead. JWU never got closer than five as R-MC closed out the win 25-15.

Parker paced the Yellow Jackets with 12 kills. Sophomore Sydney Koch (Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson) added nine and attacked at a nearly 62% clip, while Hall finished with seven. Parker and senior Angela Tender (Manassas, Va. / Stone Bridge) each had three service aces. Sophomore Macguire Gubba (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City Area School District) grabbed a team-high 17 assists. Sophomore Madison Warlick (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) led the team defensively with nine digs. Senior Kai Cunningham (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) was the team leader at the net with four blocks while fellow senior Bailey Jones (Suffolk, Va. / Norfolk Collegiate) added three. R-MC attacked at a .526 hitting percentage in the final set en route to the win.

#8 Colorado College 3, Randolph-Macon 0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-19)

The eighth-ranked Tigers were able to get ahead 8-4 early, but R-MC got within one on kills from Parker, Koch and Hall as well as a CC attack error.  But the Yellow Jackets never secured a lead and CC got a 5-0 run late to win the first frame 25-15.

It was a similar story in the second set where the teams traded the first few points, but CC was able to edge out R-MC early. The Tigers were helped by a 7-3 run through the middle stages of the set and earned the set win 25-14.

The Yellow Jackets were able to advance a lead early in the third set and earned a tie at 5-5 on a kill from Jones. But the Tigers responded with five straight points to lead 10-5. R-MC got as close as one at 11-12, but the Tigers never relinquished the lead an won the set and match 25-19.

Parker led the Yellow Jackets with six kills, while Koch and Jones each added four. Tender collected nine assists, with Gubba adding eight. Parker, Hall, Jones and Koch all had one block assist in the contest. Junior Mackenzie Loewe (Leonardtown, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) led the way on defense with seven digs. Warlick and Gubba each tallied a service ace.

Play in the Colorado College Invitational continues tomorrow. R-MC will face DePauw at 12:00 PM before taking on Illinois College at 2:00 PM.
