Shutdown Defense, Creative Offense Leads To 3-0 Men's Soccer Win

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – A stifling defense and a creative offense helped push Randolph-Macon men's soccer to a 3-0 win against Cabrini on Saturday. Exciting plays led the offensive push for R-MC.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 3, Cabrini 0

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./R-MC Soccer Field

Records: R-MC 3-1, Cabrini 1-3

How It Happened

  • The tone of the match was really set two minutes into the game. Senior Andrew Gyimesi (Midlothian, Va. / James River) bicycle kicked the ball into the far corner away from the keeper on a ball that came in from just outside the six-yard box. Sophomore Aaron Eiser (North Chesterfield, Va. / Monacan) was credited with the assist for his efforts on the throw in to put Gyimesi into the position to score on the unique play.
  • Eiser continued to be a force on defense, keeping most of the Cabrini attack at a minimum. Cabrini was able to get just one shot on goal the whole afternoon. Fellow defenders, juniors Isaac Myers (Littlestown, Pa. / Gettysburg Area) and Paul Duffy (Salem, Va. / Salem) and freshman Ryan Staton (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley).
  • The first half continued to be creative offensively for R-MC. Freshman Judge Morgan (Okinawa, Japan / Kubasaki) flicked a pass from sophomore Dylan Ogletree (La Plata, Md. / La Plata) into goal past the keeper for his first career goal. Senior Peyton Chichester (Richmond, Va. / James River) also got an assist credit for the play.
  • As the second half got underway, R-MC played tough on defense yet again. Throughout the second half, R-MC did not allow a single shot to Cabrini for the entire period of play.
  • Eiser got his first career goal in the 74th minute as he turned a ball in to the far post after a free kick. Junior Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va. / Benedictine) got the assist on the play as he initiated the free kick into the box that led to the goal.

Inside the Numbers

  • The win marked R-MC's first clean sheet of 2018.
  • Senior goalie Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) recorded just one save ... because there was just one shot on goal in the whole match. His defense, anchored by Duffy, Staton, Myers and Eiser kept most of the danger far away from Breslin and the goal. Cabrini did not get many chances inside the box because of crushing defense around the 18-yard box.
  • Randolph-Macon played much of the game in its own attacking third. The Yellow Jackets saw ten shots on goal, including two from each Astruc and Ogletree. Especially in the last 15 minutes of play of the first half, R-MC kept the pressure on, keeping the ball away from many of Cabrini's forwards.
