Penalty Downs Men's Soccer Against Generals

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – Randolph-Macon men's soccer tied the game on an 88th minute penalty kick, but the same play contributed to the Yellow Jackets' loss to Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon in a double-overtime thriller.

The Basics

Score: Washington and Lee 2, Randolph-Macon 1 (2 OT)

Location/Venue: Lexington, Va./Watt Field (Duchossois Complex)

Records: Washington and Lee (4-3, 2-0 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (4-5, 1-3 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • R-MC got a trio of opportunities in its offensive third around the 12th minute as the Yellow Jackets had three straight corner kicks. A few moments later, junior Paul Duffy (Salem, Va. / Salem) launched a shot that was saved by W&L goalie Michael Nyc.
  • Randolph-Macon had a pair of opportunities late in the period as well as Duffy and sophomore Dylan Ogletree (La Plata, Md. / La Plata) had a shot each blocked by W&L's defense.
  • A defensive first half gave way to the game's first goal early in the second half. W&L had solid offensive chances within the first five minutes of the second period, with Harris Salom converting his chance with a goal into the upper right corner of the goal in the 51st minute.
  • Much of the remainder of the second half looked like the first – a lot of work through the middle of the field for both teams.
  • After sophomore Aaron Eiser (North Chesterfield, Va. / Monacan) took a shot that was blocked, junior Christian Torres (Stafford, Va. / C.D. Hylton) looked to have another open chance, but he was foule. Duffy converted his penalty kick chance to tie the game in the 88th minute, which forced an overtime period when neither team could score in the remaining two minutes.
  • Randolph-Macon had all of the offense in the first overtime. Eiser took a chance on a shot that was blocked and R-MC got a pair of corner kicks from senior Anthony Astruc (Glen Allen, Va. / Benedictine) and Torres, but none of the chances found the net.
  • In the second overtime, Washington and Lee was issued a penalty kick on a tough play inside the 18-yard box, which was converted by Dylan Ritch and ended the game with the 2-1 victory on the Generals' side.

Key Players

  • Eiser won numerous tackles through the defensive third and the midfield. He challenged opponents all game with strong skills, taking chances away from the Generals wherever he could.
  • Senior Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) made eight saves, while R-MC's defensive unit of Eiser, Duffy, junior Isaac Myers (Littlestown, Pa. / Gettysburg Area) and freshman Ryan Staton (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) were credited with a team save as well.
  • Station was in the mix for much of the action in the midfield and defensive third, securing his Generals' foes and ensuring that they did not advance many opportunities on goal.

Inside The Numbers

  • Duffy had a pair of shots on goal and three shots overall, which include his penalty opportunity.
  • W&L had the 19-12 edge in shots.
  • R-MC had the 7-5 advantage on corner kicks, which included four in the first half and two in the first overtime period.
